That's dumb- could have just pulled out science dictionary and ended it.
Never understood the point of spelling bees- because they hinge on learning words nobody uses. Might as well as be a game of concentration IMO. Hit em with the words that sound the same but are spelled differently depending on context- maybe then I will give them any credit if they win one.

I've never understood the point of hitting a white ball with a stick and running back and forth a lot, but that's basically the premise of baseball, golf, ping pong, and probably several other billion-dollar franchises. Mankind likes to compete, even at fundamentally pointless activities.

Spelling Bees don't measure a person's level of intelligence. It's a "contest" - nothing more.
There are many brilliant people who are/were terrible at spelling - case in point:
- William Faulkner
- F. Scott Fitzgerald
- Ernest Hemingway
- John Keats
- Fanny Flagg
- Albert Einstein
- Winston Churchill
- Leonardo Da Vinci
- Agatha Christie
- John F. Kennedy

I don't think so. Is it on youtube? not sure. but highly recommended. it is not about spelling, at all. it is about achievement under difficult circumstances.

For heaven's sake, people, this is a competition for children, not adults. Or didn't any of you have spelling tests in school? This is just an outgrowth of teaching kids how to spell.

There are quite a lot of kids who are not good spellers (less effective memory, whatever). It's a little hard on the ones that are the always the first few to miss-spell all the time isn't it ?

It builds the vocabulary while involving goal setting and family participation. If a child is competing then adults are helping.
