What have you sweet-talked or bribed your way into (or out?

Inspired by the draft dodger thread... 

True story -- I have actually bribed my way into another country.... in South America. Not all countries really care ALL that much if you have the appropriate VISA or not to get in. Sometimes, you can get a taxi cab to drive through the gates, you slip your cab driver an extra $20, there's a little conversation between the taxi driver and the customs officer, a slight of hand, and -- wallah! You're in another country. It was $20 USD though, so that was a lot.   We only spent the day there though. Saw some stuff and came back through (in the same taxi).

I cried my way out of a speeding ticket once. But not really on purpose. I was really freaking upset about something and was literally already crying (and I'm not a crier) when I got pulled over.  I figure every chick gets at least one of those per lifetime. I used mine.

I don't think I've ever really sweet-talked anyone though. I'm not much of a sweetie.

Can't think of much off hand.

I'm not sure if I "got out" of a ticket once just because the officer was being nice or if I "sweet talked" but I did play the overworked student bit.  Though it was true, I was getting out of class late at night after working a 9 hour shift.  I also got out of a speeding ticket by saying I was new in town (which, again, I was.)  So again, not sure if it was sweet talk, or the officer was feeling generous.

Other than than, can't think of anything.  I generally try to appeal to logic than emotion when making my case.

I've never bribed anyone.  I have, on occasion, bought lunch or something for people who help me out.  But that's not really what I consider a "bribe."  I consider that returning a favor.

In all seriousness, I overslept a final in college. I had my alarm set, wasn't even up that late and missed the whole thing. I got there with 10 minutes left. I was wreck - trying not to cry, but doing it anyway, still in my pajamas with a sweatshirt over them. My instructor told me to relax, and that he would let me take the final after everyone else was done. It really wasn't talking him into it because someone else missed it too, but yeah he saved my bacon. It was statics and if I hadn't taken that final, I wouldn't have done well enough in the class to take half the classes I was enrolled in for the next semester. It literally would have set me back and entire semester.

I have gotten out of a few tickets but not from bribing my way out.  I was just lucky.

1.  I was heading to work when I got pulled over for not having my updated tag sticker on my plate.  I thought DH1 put it on since he told me he would.  I told the cop I could show him that I wrote the check and everything!  He grinned and said that an accident just  took place close to where we were and he had to attend to that since it was more urgent.  He said that I got lucky and to get my sticker put on so he won't have to pull me over again.  He liked my car.  It was a new 1982 Collector's Edition Corvette. 

2.  I was told to pull over (cop was in the street just waving all of us over for speeding) and yelled "Do you know how fast you were going?  What's the speed limit through here?"  I was running late for work and I was so nervous I handed him my master card instead of my driver's license.      I was lucky he didn't arrest me for bribery but he told me to slow it down.  He was laughing at me when I said "Sorry!  I'm nervous and I'm used to pulling the cc out way more than I do the DL".  He had about 6 cars pulled over and said I wasn't the worst offender and since my office was up the street he let me go. 

Cops were so nice back then!  Now they swarm your car like you are a felon and treat you like crap.  Don't ask me how I know this.  The last time I can remember being pulled over was in 1992 when I had my red Corvette.  Not that it was me, or anything.    I'm so glad I don't have Corvette's any more.  I've not been pulled over since so I KNOW it was those damn cars.

   I once got the use of a 2 y.o. used Nissan that I was trying out and thinking of buying for a Week.   The manager told me to take it home and drive it around for " a few days, " so I did.   I know this sounds weird, but it's entirely true ( Nissan dealer in Paw Paw, MI ).   So, I drove it for awhile.   I put gas in it.   I told my first husband that our station wagon was at the dealers, and I was driving one of their Nissans.  

   At the end of the week ( or so ), the manager called up and asked if I liked the car, and told him that if he would have the paperwork ready, I would stop in after work and sign them, and use our ( paid off ) Ford Crapper ( no I didn't call it that to his face ) as a trade-in.   ( This was back in 1985 when Ford quality was pretty low ).   He was happy, and after work, I drove his car to his dealership, and bought it.   We decided that my husband would sign off on it when he came back from his job on the other side of the state at the end of the week.  

   The dealership carried us on their ins. until my first husband signed off on the car and transfer of the Ford 2 days later.  Amazing !

  I have talked my way into and out of various tickets and tight situations by just being very nice and calm.   It usually helps things if I behave in that fashion.

I've never bribed anyone, but I have gotten out of a few tickets. I'm not beautiful or anything, but I do have this cute, flustered female thing that I can pull off pretty well.

And I've lied through my teeth when I got pulled over when I went joyriding at 14 without a license.I still don't know how I got out of that one. It helped that I looked 20.

THe last time I got pulled over, I was too pissed to do anything but want to get it over with. The sad things was that I was 16 weeks pregnant at the time and still nauseous, I could have totally played off the pregnant thing. But I was too pissed off at the cop to do it. (So, why was I pissed off, as I am heading into work, there is an interchange where the traffic increases about 400% (before that point, it is just rural freeway). The next exit a mile up the road is the edge of the city and traffic doubles again. But it gets sorted out about a half mile past because it is about 4 miles to the next exit.  Halfway in between the first 2 exits, the traffic just slams on the breaks and everyone drops to just below the speed limit. I was already running late, pissy etc. I didn't see anything on my side of the road So once, I see a break in the traffic, I just want to get around it and then go back to going about 7 above the speed limit. So, I get moving through everything and I see in my rear view mirror an SUV coming up behind me. I know want to get around the rest of the slow moving traffic, but I want to get out of his way too. So, I take it up 10 over the speed limit to get around everyone and low and behold it was a COP in the SUV.  I was not happy.  I was pissed that traffic was being stupid and I was trying to get out of the way. Yes I was speeding, I deserved it, but dang that was a cheap ticket.  I was just like give me the ticket so I can get to work. I was polite but very short with the cop because I was so mad (at him, at myself, everyone).

Now that I think about it, I did once talk my way into a C when I should have gotten an F.

Basically, I was failing a class halfway through the semester.  I e-mailed the professor, asking if there was any extra credit or something I could do to raise my grade.  I told him I was working really hard at it (and I was.)  He asked me what grade I think I should get, and I said a C.  And that's what I got.

I've talked my way out of a speeding ticket when I asked the cop that stopped me if he really was going to traumatized me further by ticketing me on my 30th birthday.  The town I was speeding in was known for NEVER giving warnings and mine was the first one this cop wrote.  It really was my 30th birthday.

Last month, I talked Delta into providing me with a hotel room and taxi vouchers when my flight got canceled and I was going to have to stay at Laguardia overnight.  It was weather related, so not their fault.

In the US it's such a faux pas .. in so many other countries it is just business as normal.

Some speeding tickets also but no bribe just lucky.

The only other thing I can think of is when I was a camp counselor.

I was 17 and got caught smoking pot by the camp manager and talked him out of telling my parents and sending me home.

When I was in college for the first semester, my attendance was not that stellar. I had missed quite a few German language classes. It became obvious that I was way behind. I went to the professor and admitted the error of my ways and asked for forgiveness. He made a deal with me: If I attended each and every class left in the semester, he would give me a C.  We both followed through with the deal.

My DH had some outpatient surgery last year. During the recovery and therapy process his driver's license got put away with some medical papers at our house. Then we wanted to fly to AZ for a vacation. We were eating breakfast at the airport 2 hours from our home when I took my driver's license out to go through security. DH didn't have his. He got on the airplane with his fishing license. He also got on the airplane going home with his fishing license.

I was amazed.

My husband and I traveled to NE for a Husker Football game last year.  While at our hotel I noticed a limoSUV with people standing outside of it wearing jerseys from NE and the opposing team.  I ran up and asked if they had room for 2 more people and the really drunk guy said yes.  So my DH and I checked into the hotel and hurried out to join the limo.  I was walking ahead of my DH and the moment the drunk guy saw my DH his face fell.  I guess he thought he was getting 2 ladies.   I was pumped we had a free ride to the game(we offered them $ for the ride and they declined).  Once we were on the way we started talking to the people inside and we realized it was a large family group that just so happened to have fans from both teams.  I felt a little bad for crashing their family ride to the game, but they were all nice and invited us to travel back home with them too.  We found a cab though....It was a fun night and a funny story...whoops!

I once got out of a ticket for saying I was lost...and I was.

When I had a sports car (aka ticket magnet), I got pulled over for speeding on Jul 1st (a Friday).  I was probably going 15 mph over speed limit.  Cop pulled me over and said it was holiday weekend (July 4th) and they were being tough on speeders, and asked where I was going.  Funeral.  And it was true.  I got a warning.

I've been pulled over probably 20 times and have only gotten 2 tickets (and both were for a lesser violation).

Friggin DH has NEVER had a ticket. He's cute, but not that cute! The last time, the officer asked him when was the last time he looked at the speedometer...DH said, "Probably when I set the cruise control to 80." (Limit was 65). And they let him go!

(That sort of unwitting disclosure of incriminating info is why I will never let him know if I commit a crime, LOL!)

When I was getting my DL there was a guy Shaun. About 20 y/old. I was almost 30 then.
I held my 1 y/old daughter. He had asked if he can holde her while I was writing something.
When it was time to go to the car for test he was still holding my child.
I was so scared od driving and I still am...so he just told me to go around parking lot and said PASSED!
I was like...sweet!!!

Lat year I am taking my DD to the same place to have her DL test and there guy with name tag Shaun!
I do not really remembered face of the first one so I go...Shaun, hi! Have you worked her 17 years ago?
He goes, no, just 3 but I know exactly what you are going to tell me. He smiled...I am not THAT Shaun.
'Unfortunately' he added. Soo I am thinking he was asked about other Shaun on a daily basis?
What was original Shaun deal? Idk...just giving out DLs fatser than anyone else?

Another one. My DH was driving frunk 20 years ago from Mother's Day party. I was sitting next to him.
We drove for about 15 min and right one street light before our house we saw tons of police cars.
They stopped us. We didn't really care  -wine-They asked me if I was his wife, we talked a little. They asked him out of the car and to walk a line. At 4 in the morning! He did walked somewhat. They asked his last name. Tried to say it, laughed and tried again...and again...we laughed together and they did unspeakable!
They asked us to go to the back seat of OUR car. They drove us home. We shook hands and they told us never to do this again. In the morning DH's first word was not 'water' but 'they could have taken my DL!!!' and he was driving for living back than...
So,we started taking cabs!And always remember those police officers!

But I am still thinking it was probably my looks! ...both times!

I had to do a field sobriety test in 4" heels, I kind of joked and flirted a bit but passed with flying colors so he didn't bother with the breathalizer

and flirted my way into VIP areas of clubs and paid 0 for bottle service at a few in LA

also talked/flirted my way into a bunch of the invite only parties that the weapon manufacturer's had at shot show in Vegas.  that was a great time and I came home with about $300 in per diem money that I didn't have to spend since I had drinks and food always being bought for me that trip.

I cried my way out of a speeding ticket once, but like honey I didn't mean to. It was my first time getting pulled over after just getting my car back after an accident and I couldn't find my insurance and registration. I had to take it out to talk to insurance after the accident. I started bawling my eyes out from the stress of not finding it - yet I had several years of past registrations and car insurance cards. By the end the cop was helping saying what about that one "no, that was last year *bawl*". So he just wrote me up for not having registration/insurance proof that would only be $15 once I took proof down to the court house.

I got a VIP table at a club on teen night in high school because no one was standing there and I wanted to sit down so I just did and my friends followed. I did it again the next time we went and one of the security guards came by after we were there and watched the table for us for the rest of the night. I guess he thought we paid for it? It was awesome to see the more popular kids from high school look up at us up there.

Talked/played dumb my way into meeting some bands.

I'm pretty good at playing dumb when it's helpful.

My mother once talked (and talked and talked and talked) her way out of a ticket. She was out after 9 in our podunk town and took a really wide turn at a back road 4 way stop just screwing around. She got pulled over and the officer asked if she'd been drinking. She said no. Then she says Oh, wait. I had a couple of drinks on New Year's Eve (which was 2 days ago), does that count? This was also her birthday. She tells him that, she asks if he knows her sister (she worked for the county and knew tons of people), she talks and talks and talks. Tells him to quit standing back there, move up here where I can see you, I'm getting a crick in my neck. He asked 2 more times if she'd been drinking. After 30 minutes of listening to her talk he sent her home.

It wasn't sweet talk but I managed to get a ticket reduced to $20.  It was mushroom hunting season and DH insisted on hunting down by the water plant, which is illegal.  He told me stay with the truck while he got out "real quick" to check for mushrooms.

Of course he comes a sheriff's car.   As soon as he reached the car I said "My dumbass husband drug me here mushroom hunting" and proceeded to go on a rant about how stupid my DH is and how I had a good mind to make him walk home.  Meanwhile the sheriff is going "Ma'am I don't think it's a good idea to ditch him here". 

We could have been in all sorts of trouble but he decided to give me a $20 "parking ticket" instead.  We weren't the first people he'd caught in the area, he'd ticketed 8 other mushroom hunters that morning.
