Here is the thing - I am finding out that homeschooling mothers are the flakiest people I've ever met.
Whenever there is a an activity or a play date scheduled, if there is a follow through, I consider it nothing short of a miracle. I never know if it's bc of my winning personality or they just don't like to drive or our kids didn't click - it's just seems that plans are schedule and cancelled ALL.THE.TIME (and funny thing, I hear it from others as well, but of course, it's never them, always "someone else")
So, to make the long story short, we met a new family last week and were suppose to go to their house tomorrow. Mom wrote me yesterday and said that oldest kid is sick, fever and cough. I asked about next week, but they are busy and the following busy too, so may be sometime in March. I was like "whatever".
She actually wrote me this morning and said that her kid doesn't have a fever anymore and is not coughing and we might be able to get together anyway.
I am thinking that it should be OK and I am not subjecting my kids to sickness. Am I right? Or am that I desperate that I am not thinking clearly anymore?
My general philosophy is that as long as it's something like a cold, I don't usually worry too much if my kids get exposed to it. I am definitely not in a "they should live in a bubble" camp.
thoughts??

I am definitely not in a "they should live in a bubble" camp.
Neither am I but I didn't deliberately expose my kids to something nasty. Healthy kids are a lot happier and so is mommy. Even taking kids shopping will expose them to some nasties but they have to develop immunities. My SIL had her kids living in a 'bubble' and as adults they have more allergies than you can count. Fortunately they are letting their kids grow up playing in a dirt pile. As long as faces and hands are clean at meals ...........
As to your friend, I would wonder if her other kids will come down with the same one day sickness. Have her decide on a play date then do as you will. Her call.

Both of my kids have whatever that kid has.
DS had a fever for 3 days, DD had it for one. They both have a lingering cough, but it's unproductive.
I let her go over to a friend's house yesterday and told the Mom that I didn't think she wanted her DD to come to our house since someone has been sick in our house all week.

My boys already had the "cough and fever" crap this year. I am hoping that we are done for the season, but obviously, who knows.
Well, let's see what the mom says tomorrow....
I am going to plan something for the boys just in case play date doesn't happen. Lord knows we have enough museum memberships.

I have 3 kids in preschool so they are always exposed to something there; plus they do Sunday school at church. I don't really try to hard to keep my kids away from colds and stuff like that...and I totally gave up trying to prevent sickness within the house.
The only thing I'd be very careful on is anything stomach related.

Colds? I guess I just got immune to sleepless nights and coughing and snot all over the place cause it just doesn't seem to freak me out that much LOL

I have known situations where a stomach bug went through the house, everyone was better, cleaning ladies came and disinfected the house, and then they had friends over a week later and the whole family get sick. I don't take any chances. I have twins and used to attempt to keep pacifiers/cups separate when one of them was sick, now i just say "screw it".

Are you hosting at all? Some people aren't comfortable with having that many kids over at their place. oh yeah, I don't mind hosting at all. Most of the families have 3 or more kids around here and it's kind of a given, so I don't "think" that's a problem, but who the heck knows.... And usually we plan to meet at various places, not each other houses.

I will admit to being that flake. It comes from the fact that I *really* want mom friends and to get my kids together with other kids more often. I'm accepting that we aren't in that stage of life right now so I've stopped trying to make plans so that I can stop cancelling all the time. (Just in case anyone is wondering our social time is spent with my family including my nearly 97 y/o dgm. Family comes first and right now that is just all the time we have).

I am one of those people are really, 100% OK being alone and I am getting too paranoid that I am projecting this on the kids. I KNOW my oldest wants to have friends, so I am trying to work on it.

I probably am worrying too much, but I can't afford TOO much money for their therapy later, so trying to do right by them now

OK, UPDATE so for anyone who cares - we went and play date was great and this mom doesn't seem flaky AT ALL!!!
They also live close by, which is a plus. I am hoping that something good will come out of this and we can have a nice friendship going. It would be awesome!!

Well, if she doesn't seem flaky, then you just haven't yet gotten to know her well enough. EVERYONE is a FLAKE on some LEVEL. EVERYONE. The more you know about someone is always just a bit too much.

What do you consider flaky? to me, if someone just says "yes, let's get together, next tue" and then I don't hear from them. Things like that. I don't expect anyone to always follow though when it comes to kids' related activities. May be my expectations are already very low
