Very sad story. But I do not understand the thread title or the yap comment.
The comments following the article in the link?

EVT1: How about changing the thread title to "Tragic Fire Claims 9 Lives" and excerpting a few paragraphs? We don't need to hear about how much you'd like to murder people. As for the story, I'm grateful at least the Dad and one of the girls still have each other. There's still a family left.

Um, opens their "yap" about what? I don't get it. But, threatening to "murder" people, not cool.

Very sad story. But I do not understand the thread title or the yap comment. The comments following the article in the link? The comments are quick to get to the point that they are criticizing the size of the family (number of kids) and saying the fire was their own fault.

For some reason, some people on the internet always have to make a judgmental argument out of everything. It's one thing to play Devil's Advocate on an issue, but these trolls are not debating anything, they're just trying to insult others. Either that, or they don't know how to construct a response without it sounding insulting. I've noticed that's a big problem with Captain Hindsight-type personalities.

How can they shut down free speech when the news outlets scream right to free speech when they are called on the carpet for reporting whatever they want whether true or not.
Don't think you can have it both ways..

looks like all the "bad" ones were deleted. the first one is condolences from Florida. there is one who is screaming about them not having basic needs fulfilled and about how the posters giving condolences suck because they don't care about poor people. could that be what you mean?

OK- was just saying maybe comments should be closed on certain topics- my bad. I should know better than to read the comments but I can't help it. That doesn't prevent free speech really does it? I just saw this story and was very sad- and then angry at what some insensitive assholes were about to say- would not want to murder them- maybe just set their house on fire with them in it.

And right on Virgil- if the two make it ok they are probably going to be the tightest family ever. I can't imagine the devastation though- don't know if I would be able to carry on after something like that.

I know there are times when I click on the comments and just want to slap myself upside the head for doing so. But I will admit that with a story like this I refrain from doing so for the very reason that it will cause my blood pressure to rise and reminds me what assholes people can be. But then I remind myself that there are good hearted folks out there too.

It's a great pity the right of free speech isn't based on the obligation to say something sensible.

The comments on this article were closed, unless you clicked on the link to open them. If you did that, you got exactly what you asked for - a bunch of unknowns mouthing off. I don't know why anyone reads that garbage. Who cares what Joe Blow thinks about something like this. It's dreadful. I know that. I don't need anybody to agree with me to know that, and I don't need to know what anybody else thinks of the suffering survivors, or the family's lifestyle. I just wish the father and daughter who survived healing, and eventual peace with the horror of what happened here.
I will say this, EVT: Making some big, momentous thing out of it here and wishing death on others doesn't help the situation in the slightest. If you don't like something, for crying out loud don't feed it!

Right on mmhmm- misplaced aggression- my bad- but I did think it worthy of debate of whether comment sections sanctioned by news organizations should allow this kind of garbage- and I know a lot of it is good people talking as well.
I almost like the new scheme where you cannot post anonymously- and why not? I think the UK was considering this a while back to get rid of the nameless trolls. Free speech will live on- just have to put your name on your comments- don't see the downside.

I'm curious - do you post on the comments page? Every now and then I have thought about signing up and posting on some, but have decided against it. But like I said, on stories such as the one in OP I know in my heart of hearts someone is going to be really nasty. I look at the "comments" button and take a deep breathe and say "do not open." Took a bit of practice but it has worked so far.

If news organizations wanted to require people to post comments with their actual names, I suppose they could try it. How they'd know whether the person posting was using his/her real name, or not, is questionable. Some people have very unusual names. I can understand those folks not wanting to use their real names on the internet, EVT. You don't know who you're posting with, and you wouldn't know who you were posting with if you were posting with someone named John Taylor. John Taylor could be the guy's real name and his real profession might be internet stalker/sociopath. No thanks. I'll stick to aliases on the internet if it's all the same to you.

I never understood using real name in email addy either. Now in a professional setting where it might be required that is one thing. But just "play" email no way am I using my real name. Some people still just forward emails and that drives me up the wall. And I will admit that I am a reader so if I get an email that has been forwarded I tend to look at all the names - being a reader is a blessing and a curse sometimes.

I never post on the comments- but I have noticed some sites require certain accounts to post- facebook, etc. And that doesn't stop people posting hatred with their name, photo, and employer on it. Those folks really puzzle me. Some anonymous speech can be real bad- at least as long as the Scotus says money=speech. Going to try to stop reading them- it was just a habit to look at the first few and see where the opinions were going but not worth the grief I guess.
