Consider this: 1. No salt trucks, and no salt stockpiled. 2. No plows 3. Likely no snow OR all season tires and no ice/snow scrapers. 4. Probably most don't have REALLY warm coats5. No experience driving on ice. It's like someone who's lived in Florida all their life trying to drive in Chicago for the first time after a snow storm. Don't. I'm a Native Californian who doesn't own a coat so I can understand that -- a suit jacket, sweaters, rain coat ~ yes. Cold weather coats -- that's for you cold weather people

Sorry if it seems insensative to comment on the state of things in the south. I can understand the lack of snow poughs and salt ont he roads. But you can't honestly tell me with a straight face that it should never have gotten this bad. It appears the standard operating proceedure for snowstorms in the south is to shut everything down and wait it out. Obviously that did not happen. Someone screwed up somewhere, and don't tell me otherwise. Don't lump the rest of the south in with the morons in ATL and Birmingham I'm in South Alabama, we have 4 hurricane days built into the school calendar and they were all before Christmas. Kids were/are out of school 3 days here. On Monday, it was in the 60s. Schools made the decision to close by midday and the local governments took a while but before end of day. IDK what was wrong with the 2 cities that had issues. The last ice event in our area, and it was mostly ice with MAYBE a flurry or 5 here, was 32 years ago according to a local news channel. WHY would we have equipment to deal with something that happens every few decades? I guess I am still wondering why out high tech, best in the world weather folks couldn't have gotten it better for the other parts (HotLanta and B'Ham.) They started warning us on Sat that is was coming out way and we friggin took action. An CL is right we don't keep millions of dollars of equipment sitting around for a 25 yr occurance. Heck we just do have some sand stockpiled and that is for road work. Oh and we don't stock pile salt either - it would melt/lump up in our humidity

I can't figure out how they didn't know either NNP, but I only saw what OUR local stations were forecasting, so I won't beat on the too bad.

My favorite comment about the snowstorm was this post on Facebook: "Snow in Atlanta. Couldn't make it to the liquor store. So we may have to survive on food & water for several days."

That reminds me, I haven't talked with my friend in Atlanta. Bet she and DH are blitzed.

As a resident of the metro ATL, we most certainly did know it was coming. I know I did. I think the officials blew the call to close the schools because the snow did not start until late morning-noon time. They thought they had time to get the kids home before it got bad, but they did not.
As for the rest, same as above. No snow on the ground, you go to work, thinking you can surely get home before it gets bad.
Winter has been really cold here and the ground was already frozen or on it's way to being frozen. It did not take much for the situation to deteriorate rapidly, given the traffic volume our roads carry. It does not take much weatherwise to mess up the traffic around here, trust me.
My husband was in Baltimore at a convention. I thought, who is foolish enough to have a convention in the winter at Baltimore? Turns out, he was better off there than here.
Now, if we can just get him home. He may be stuck in Baltimore as his flight home has been really delayed and may be cancelled. I work from home, so I don't have to get out in this mess.
Will soon need groceries though.

A couple of articles I've seen commented on this mess being a testament to the importance of having a good mass transit system. They mentioned that this is a learning opportunity for many midwestern and western cities that currently don't have much in the way of alternative transportation like many NE cities do.

We do have MARTA trains and MARTA buses. I suppose there is much room for improvement.
The worst part was the kids being stuck on a school bus in the cold and dark or at the school. Any parents nightmare, for sure.
Despite the mess we found ourselves in, I am very thankful no one got their temper up and everyone seemed willing to stay calm in spite of the weather insanity. I have not heard of any fights, arguments or crimes being committed during the snow jam. There were many accidents, but no deaths or serious injuries that I am aware of, so grateful for that.

The article indicated that although there are some trains in ATL, the system is not every extensive and so can't divert much traffic from the roadways. Many Western cities suffer the same problem. I agree that people seem to have generally responded really well during this crisis. Many stories of people offering to help find stranded drivers, offering homes, and providing other services to fellow citizens. And kudos to the teachers who stayed with all those stranded kids!!

Now THAT'S poor planning! Lol, Meghan. I came home Tuesday afternoon, and I mentioned that I might have to drink Dh's specialty beers that are in the mini-fridge. No problem because I don't think he heard what I said. Wednesday morning I went out to retrieve the diet coke I store out there, and a 30-pack of my beer was there. I had at least a six-pack left in the fridge. I was like, "Wow." Obviously, my DH knows how to prepare for snowmageddon. I'm set for at least another two weeks. Unfortunately, they are reopening schools on Monday.
