I'm about to melt some minds up in this beotch, but I read an article today in HuffPo about Richard Sherman- the Seattle Seahawk's CB who became famous for, I feel, the ridiculously overblown media freakout over the outrageous statement: "I'm the best corner[back] in the game. When you try me with a sorry receiver like Crabtree, that's the result you going to get." --Richard Sherman And I couldn't find anything in the article I disagreed with. I'm particularly disgusted by those who don't know a DAMN THING about the man calling him a "thug". If he's a thug, let's hope I'm raising a straight up thug just like him. Anyway- here's the HuffPo article which more completely explains it: www.huffingtonpost.com/isaac-saul/what-richard-sherman-taught-us_b_4631980.html

I'm not defending him for what he said per se, but the reaction was ridiculous. It overshadowed everything that his whole team accomplished for three days, and a whole bunch of people jumped on the bandwagon. If I recall Mohammed Ali declared, "I am the greatest" and it became his calling card. I was too young to remember, but did anyone flip out?

I don't think the guy is a thug. An arrogant prick? Maybe. Showed bad sportsmanship? Definitely. But not a thug.

From my point of view, the insults thrown by a bunch of "who is its" on Twitter don't mean beans. Sherman can talk trash about Crabtree and the "who is its" on Twitter can talk trash about Sherman. So what? That doesn't, in any way, "overshadow everything his whole team accomplished for three days." At least, it doesn't unless you allow it to do so. Mr. Sherman has done very well with his life and has reason to be proud of what he's done. I doubt pretty seriously he's going to let the garbage being spouted on social sites like Twitter affect him in the slightest.

I HATE the talking heads (so called sports casters) on the friggin sidelines sticking mics in peoples faces and asking dumb questions like (at half time) "what do you think it will take to win the game"? Well, DUDH score more points.
ETA: as for Sherman I don't care about what he says. It's football folks not the Geneva Peace Conferences!!!

Much ado about nothing. Trash talking in sports had been going on forever. ANd, I would much rather see an HONEST moment in front of the camera than the canned, package responses that are now the norm. It is refreshing. ANd, it allowed the fans to get inside his mind. And, what he said was ON the football field. He himself said you have to go into your "game" mode where you literally transform your mind to be able to play at that level. So, he's a young guy. Let him have his moment of beating his chest, sheesh. I get tired of all the nannies and naysayers of the world. Be who are you are and DON'T apologize.

I'm not contending that it actually overshadows everything he and his team have done. I'm saying it tainted the otherwise euphoric afterglow of a division title. Because the talking heads couldn't stop inserting the 'rant' into all things Seahawks. We have family in Denver, so game-wise we're rooting for the Bronchos anyway. I just thought it was a shame the way this story would NOT go away. It wasn't that big a deal.

This will have a chilling effect on sports. Young athletes will be afraid to say the "wrong" thing in front a camera. So, the responses will all become more canned and prepared. And, we fans and viewers will not get to part of the raw emotion of sports. For the fans, it is Lose Lose.

He didn't "taint" anything. Anyone who actually HAS played team sports understand that their teammates all go through ups and downs and good and bad moments. He produced ON the field. That is what matters to the team. The rest, who cares? So, he came out and beat his chest against an opponent. The team is in no way going to hold that against him.

What's even more a shame is people dragging it all over the internet and blowing it out of proportion with statements they later say: "Oh, but I didn't mean it that way." I'm sorry, but I find that just as offensive as I do some of those ignorant Twitter comments. If you really don't like that sort of thing, I'd say it's best not to do more of it yourself. YMMV

Because the talking heads are to stupid to come up with anything new, original or god forbid something else they may have to do a little research on to provide something new or original in the broadcast. I call them pete and repeat time and time again. And yes, I could probably do a better job but who wants to listen to an old broad on national TV talk about pro football

And they do call Sherman's statements "trash talk" for a reason. Just wait until game day. I don't think his jive will be as bonafide then.

I think there's something to that point. 'Goon squad' lineups touch off melee ... McGrattan was left bloodied in a fight with Vancouver tough guy Tom Sestito. m.espn.go.com/nhl/story?storyId=10316780&src=desktop "Goon squad"? "Tough guy"? Sherman spoke and was labeled a thug. I would say there is something to it.

I would say there is something to it. It could be a matter of "guilt by association" though. The NFL is developing a well-earned reputation for being an organization full of thuggery-- 31 arrests in the off season ranging from DUI to murder don't do a lot for the image of the NFL. Sadly, maybe a guy like Sherman just gets lost in the shuffle and an increasingly thug-weary audience-- fair or not-- concludes he's just one of the gang? Perhaps the NFL needs to clean up its act league-wide so guys like Sherman (with his stellar academic record, conspicuously absent sideline and interview profanity, and clean record on and off the field) are more the image of the NFL? I've long thought that pro athlete is a high honor and privilege- and that if a player cannot conduct themselves well off the field, they don't deserve to take the field. I know, I'm old. But that's how I have felt for some time.

All I can say about todays players (and not all of them) is that they make my Raiders of the 70's look like choir boys

As a die-hard Seahawks fan, I love Richard Sherman! People actually know who the Seahawks are now, and that they DONT play in Alaska! He talked some trash, so what? I know it was unsportsmanlike, but it happens. People also forget this guy is only 25. How many of us made mistakes at that age? He is a good guy who motivates his team, his community, does tons of charity work, and goes back to his school in both Compton and Stanford and motivates students there as well. Trash talking (and maybe one unknown PED offense) are the worst this guy has EVER done! He doesnt assault women, kill dogs, drive drunk, or shoot people. He is a genuinely nice guy, who likes to talk some smack to make the game more entertaining for everyone involved. People either love him, or love to hate him.
GO HAWKS!!!!
PS.....how awesome is Russell Wilson though? No one can say shit bad about that kid!

I watched the game on Sunday so I saw the post game interview. I admit my immediate thought was "what the f*** is going on?!" but by the next day it was more, meh. It was a championship game, the guy is going to the Super Bowl, and was interviewed seconds after his team won. Emotions and adrenaline having to be running pretty high in that moment. So much as he's saying stuff that may (or may not) make him cringe down the road, well, it could be a hell of a lot worse, and trash-talking isn't going to get my panties in a wad. There are so many terrible people playing professional sports that Sherman's rant shouldn't be on anyone's radar, IMHO.

Yeah, he couldn't gotten ahead of himself and hollered "I'm going to Disney World" Haven't they already made the commercials with the players ahead of time just to be able to show them immediately after the game

When I was 14 I saw where the owner of a satirical website about ninjas had posted a page full of the death threats he'd received for claiming that ninjas committed suicide by swallowing frisbees.
Nothing said by anybody about anybody on the Internet has shocked or concerned me much since then.

When I was 14 I had a Commodore 64 and the "internet" was a pipe dream- and even then, nobody ever imagined anything remotely like what we've got today-- with awesome meme-generators (used to create the OP) to express our opinions...
