If he wants to actually get funding... after his current store has a history of profit, he's established a working franchise model that also shows a profit and he has a well-defined need for the investment cash (such as funding expansion, advertising the franchise, etc.)
If he just wants to see if he can get some free advertising for the store - and that's OK, too, looks like many of the businesses are there just to do that - then he can go for it whenever he wants. From what I can tell, the ones that aren't really investment grade but still make it onto the show are the ones with a tug at your heart backstory, interesting characters or a very unique product. He probably wouldn't qualify on #1 or #3, but from reading his posts, he might have a good shot at #2.

Not giving up ownership percentage, so venture capital is out for me.
Right now I have no use for the money. If we fast forward several years and assume I have a pretty reliable business plan and concept that could be franchised, I'm not willing to give up a percentage after taking all the risk and developing the plan.
I'd rather raise money from clueless rubes that don't ask for voting shares, or large percentages.

Good plan, Dark.
When we were starting our business, DH really wanted to go in with a partner (one of his friends and a supplier in the industry.) I didn't really want to do this but was willing to listen to the proposal. Luckily, nobody could agree on the details of the plan, so it dropped. Although the cash contributed by the proposed partner would have made our lean years less lean (no more rationing the shampoo or having $10 to spend on our kid's Christmas), I'm so very glad it didn't work out because now there is no partner that we need to hassle with or share revenue with. Life is good for us now and hopefully in a few years, you'll be posting the same thing.

Reality TV doesn't like original. They have their formula and they stick to it show after show after show after show. When people get tired of it, they cancel that show, come up with a different formula, and start shooting a new show that's exactly the same in every episode for 8 seasons.

This is funny because Shark Tank itself is a copycat of the original Canadian version, Dragons Den. Also starring Kevin O'Leary. Who was just on CBC radio talking about how he's a big proponent of arranged marriages and after a lot of research, has decided that he will be helping to arrange his own 20-year old daughter's marriage. Creepy.

It will be interesting to see what Kevin's 20 year old daughter has to say on the subject.

It will be interesting to see what Kevin's 20 year old daughter has to say on the subject. She negotiated to keep 55% of the marriage decision in exchange for 25% of the first borns naming rights.

Hm. Given that she's Kevin's daughter, I would have expected her to negotiate a royalty deal. An ongoing payment of $100 per visit until the first grandchild is produced, in which case it goes to $1000....

Au contraire - $1000 in perpetuity for the daughter. The deal should be that daughter gets the payments in exchange for agreeing to the deal. And trust me, most proud grandpas will pay up to see their grandkids...
