One not raising kids in fear. Yes, this one time it turned out tragically. People have died slipping when they are getting out of bed. They have been killed in their beds. What can you do to ensure you won't die.

I doubt they were in the MIDDLE of the road. Here in town, you have to rake your leaves to the curbside. And, most likely that is what they were doing. And, yes that is a poor place to play in the leaves precisely because of this. So, I don't know that you can fault the driver. And, it probably truly was one of the those things. THe parent probably was out raking and the kids were helping and decided to jump in the pile and the parent left for a second. It is tragic but things can happen in an instant. And, yes that is a poor place to pay but the parents are going to be paying the price for this for the rest of their lives. Not sure that putting anyone in jail is solving anything or that anyone deserves to be jailed at all.
We seem to have a need to pronounce judgement and punishment for everything that happens.

I agree that being jailed for running over the pile of leaves and thus the girls should not earn a trip to jail. That once it was known there were lives involved, that the driver did not return to the scene is what created the appropriateness for consequence.

Yes , leaving the scene of an accident should definitely be charged if the driver knew what happened. No question.

There is some question whether she knew immediately but it is clear that when she found out, she did not turn herself in voluntarily. The boyfriend who was with her and took the car to a car wash got jail time. She got probation. Gender equity?

I was thinking along the line of not allowing young kids to play in the street. The only thing ensured in this universe is entropy.
