This truly is a tragedy. The children were hiding in a pile of leaves in the road. The woman probably should have stopped once she realized she had run over something, but she did not know they were children. The parents should not let their children be hiding in leaves in the road. The young woman who was driving also did not contact police once she realized what had happened.
This had been all over the news in our area. I do find it bothersome that no one seems to feel the parents hold some responsibility for allowing the children to play in the leaves in the road. Supposedly the parents had just stepped back into the house to put a camera away. They had been taking pictures of the children playing in the leaves.

For me this is a clear example of shirt happens. There is no blame or responsibility to be assigned in regards to the initial incident.
What will be interesting to me is what sentence she will receive compared to the 13 months given to the boyfriend who washed the car involved in the accident. Should she receive more, less, or the same as he got?

Yeah, that part confuses me. Which part? She could receive more prison, same prison time, less prison time, or no prison time. She was the driver who failed to report herself. The boyfriend got 13 months for his actions. What should she get for hers?

The fact that the boy got a sentence, it seems strange that it happened before she has even been sentenced. She was the driver, unless there are mitigation circumstances it should be the other way around. Ie she should have received sentencing first as she was the driver, then him.

Oh I see, I didn't know that. That is what I was confused about and you cleared it up.

What kind of a moron lets their kids hide in the middle of the road?

What kind of a moron lets their kids hide in the middle of the road? Since the driver had to swerve to hit the pile, it isn't likely they were in the middle of the road. Shit happens. www.freerangekids.com/

I don't care where in the road the pile of leaves were. Those children should never have been on the road in the first place. A road is NOT a playground. I would hold the parents to blame for this tragedy. What driver would ever think that a kid was under a pile of leaves on a road?

If one has to assign blame, the parents are as good a choice as any. What do you think? Murder II? Negligent Homicide? 10 years? Twenty? Life?

Exactly. I would never expect kids to be buried in a pile of leaves IN THE ROAD!

And what was the pile of leaves doing in the road in the first place. The town/city where the deaths occurred may pick up loose piles of leaves in the road, but they sure do not in my state.
The only leaves my state will pick up must be bagged and on the curb. Here, loose piles of leaves in the street are left to blow away onto other folks properties or wash down the street(s) and clog up the sewer drains.
I use my lawn mower to mulch leaves on my property. Free fertilizer.

A lot of neighborhoods in this area have what we call a parking strip. There is a sidewalk then a small grassy area that sometimes has trees. This little strip of land is maintained by the homeowner but owned by the city. In a nearby city you are allowed to pick which type of tree you wish from an approved city list and they will come out and plant it for you. Also depending on city ordinance you are not allowed to remove those trees because they belong to the city. Since they belong to the city you rake the leaves from those trees into the street and the city will come along and pick them up. Not exactly sure of all the exact ordinances relating directly to the city where this accident occurred, just speaking in general how I have seen this work in other Oregon cities.

I wondered the same thing, Tenn. Why would a pile of leaves be left in the street? It really doesn't make any sense to me, but perhaps things are done differently where these folks live. You wouldn't see that here, that's for sure. ETA: Thanks, Sharon. I've never heard of such a thing. It does help clarify why there would be a pile of leaves in the street for these kids to be playing in.

Fortunately, folks around here are pretty good about keeping up with things. My gardeners handle mine. They'll stop by a couple of times in a week when the leaves are really falling, or there's a big wind while the leaves are falling. I can imagine having the neighbors "droppings" blowing into your yard would be pretty darned irritating!

Here in the trailer park the management mows them and leaves them for fertilizing the grass. I think that's the best solution. But whatever the city, town, village, etc. does, the fact still remains - what parents would let their kids play in the road at all?

I could be wrong because I have before but if the girl swerved toward the pile I would imagine the pile was probably on the side of the road. I wouldn't imagine she would jump the curb to get them, maybe she did I don't know but it stands to my reasoning that's where they were. I would like to see if the dad is being truthful about the photos, it seems like the parent a lot of times " just stepped" away when some awful happens.
What parent lets their children play in a pile of leaves by the side of the road? .. and takes photos.

The kids were probably already dead before the car hit them and this was an attempt for the parents to frame a driver for the crime which they had already committed.

People have died slipping when they are getting out of bed. They have been killed in their beds. What can you do to ensure you won't die.

13 months for washing a car, and that other kid got probation for killing a bunch of people because he was drunk. Ahhh, it must be great to be uber-wealthy.

What kind of a moron lets their kids hide in the middle of the road? It doesn't sound like the middle of the road but rather right on the edge of the curb (where people might park?) not where you would expect people to be driving. She intentionally swerved to run over the big pile of leaves.

The driver was sentenced on Friday. 3 years probation, 250 hours community service and then she was arrested and placed on an immigration hold. She will probably be deported.

This is heartbreaking for everyone.
I remember many years ago in a town I lived in a police car ran over a box in a back alley while on patrol. Two kids were playing in the box and both died.
The only thing I remember on the outcome is the officer resigned from the force.
