What a sad story. I'm so sorry for those parents. I didn't see anything about a leg on the table, though. I'll have to read the article again. So far, it seems, the doctor hasn't said much and the hospital is only saying they're investigating. Will be interesting to follow this to see if we find out what the heck was going on!

I've got a second cousin that has CP as a result of overly aggressive forceps use during birth. I have no idea of the status of any lawsuits or whatever though, I lost touch as my generation of kids grew up. all I remember is my mom cautioning that my "Cousin C" was older than me but was sick and didn't understand a lot of what I did. I can't imagine that the hospital wouldn't investigate. I'll totally look out for updated info on this. so sad!

Of fucking hell. Because it would leave a scar?!?!?! God, after my shitty experience (that was no where near this bad!) I have since learned to ask doctors why when they turn down something I ask them for.
I had a toe rip most of the way off, but not completely. Two days later I had to go into see someone to remove it since it got infected and I could barely walk from the pain. I was so grossed out at the idea of him removing my nail I couldn't watch what he did. The next morning I went to remove the bandage like he said, only to discover he put gauze straight on my nailbed instead of an anti-stick bandage. After an hour plus of pure hell, my parents finally drove the hour to take me back to the doctor.
It was a different Dr because the one I saw was in surgery that day. It was almost 45 minutes of trying (again, after an hour of hell at home) of me screaming bloody fucking murder (seriously, I couldn't control tears streaming down my face and I could barely breath from the pain) that my mom finally called it. Asked the Dr to come back in, and he still was not wanting to numb my big toe and just take the bandage off (HE WANTED TO JUST LET ME WALK AROUND FOR HOWEVER MANY DAYS TIL IT CAME OFF ON ITS OWN) because he didn't like fucking needles and to numb your big toe they have to stick you 4 times. He thought I was full of shit when I told him that pain of numbing would be heaven compared to what he had put me through - yeah, he shut up after the second the first needle went in I calmed down because my body knew the pain was almost over.
As much as I trust doctors, that experience has made sure I forever ask WHY they don't do what I ask. A concrete answer why they won't do what I ask. And a GOOD answer - not just saying to avoid a scar. WTF. God, it's over six months later and I still remember how much that hurt. I'm pretty sure there's a good chance my mom is scared at hearing me scream and cry for 45 minute straight unable to console/calm me. Hell, even when the nurse left for 5 or so minutes to let it soak the pain was so much I couldn't stop crying - I asked her to tell them to knock me out before they finally numbed my toe. I was so hysterical from the pain that I couldn't ask for them to just numb me until she stopped them. AGH, never again.

After one too many messed up IV insertions I swear I have PTSD from it, I tell them they get one chance and they laugh. They find I am all good and calm before a surgery and even comment on it until I get to to the IV insertion then it's hysterical city.

I'm like that with a simple blood test. I've had them (lab techs) screw up more times than not lately- when they get that needle ready to inject it into my vein is one thing - then they have to switch vials to get two (or sometimes three) samples - it makes me want to throw up.
I've always had to have the tests off & on over the years but it seems lately, the techs are so incompetent to do it properly. I could breeze through it before - now the thought of having it done makes my stomach churn.

Dear God. My hospital talked about forceps but mainly to say they don't use them much anymore. That poor family.

I am pretty sure the headaches my DD experiences were from the forceps. Pretty hard to prove.
I am beyond sad for this family.

Dear God. My hospital talked about forceps but mainly to say they don't use them much anymore. That poor family. In my experience, forceps are used rarely these days. There are better methods, and a C-section prevents the need. I was a forceps baby, but I've never had any problems that I could blame on forceps.

I've always had to have the tests off & on over the years but it seems lately, the techs are so incompetent to do it properly. I could breeze through it before - now the thought of having it done makes my stomach churn. I now insist on them using a butterfly needle if they are doing more than one vial. For some reason just the action of them taking off a vial and putting a new one on gets the needle out of my vein (and it's hard enough to get in it to begin with! It's rare I only get stuck once) and has them searching around for it. Yeah, I'm the obstinate patient. One insisted that I had "good" veins, I told her I'm sure I had way more experience with my veins than her, but if she would like to point out previous times she's successfully gotten blood from my "good" veins I'd let her not use a butterfly. She didn't like that, but shut up and got the butterfly.

I get my blood taken all the time, the good ones know to use a butterfly. I've been poked by needles on a overly basis since 1963, I know my veins.
I'm sorry for that family.

So extremely sad. I thought forceps were almost never used in the US for this very reason?? I am not a fan of the lets do a c-section on everyone crowd but NO way would I allow forceps used on me and I felt that way long before this article.

That is sooooo sad what those parents went through. I can relate. Due to a series of doctors errors, we lost our first grandson. He was born brain dead and lived only 3 days. I watched him die in my daughter's arms.

What a terrible tragedy. Unfortunately, there is a lot of negative publicity about C-Sections. But, there are times a C-section is absolutely life saving because it is the quickest way to get the infant out if the baby is compromised in anyway. I think we need to stop bashing doctors who have a very difficult decision to make when they opt for a C-section. The reality is that it is better to err on the side of caution versus not.

Wow that is terrible. A lot of emphasis was given at the hospital I gave birth at that they avoid forceps at all costs. They also only allow you to try vaginally for so long before they do a C-section. I can't imagine a doctor saying no C-section because it would "leave a scar". WTF? The mother and baby's lives are far more important than cosmetic appearance. My grandmother has cerebal palsy from forceps. She doesn't have any mental disabilities but her left arm and right leg don't work right. She fought her way thru during a time when she was pretty much expected to be house/bed bound. There wasn't physical therapy like there is today. DH has been with me for 10 years and was surprised when I told him. He'd never noticed.
