Did you just upgrade to 8? What player are you using?

It's Windows Media Player. And Windows 8 came with my new laptop. I downloaded RealPlayer and it wouldn't work either.

I saw that, mmhmm. It requires an additional download. I wasn't wanting to do that. I was hoping it was some process or something that I didn't see. Everything I can find says you can't play DVDs on Windows 8 without an additional download. Your link confirmed that. Thank you.

Sure. I just glanced at it, but it seemed pretty clear that a further download would be required. It's a shame they chose to do that. To me, it makes them look like they did no planning, at all, for Windows 8.

They say the reason was that nobody watches DVDs on their comps anymore - everybody streams them. Just one more thing I HATE about Windows 8.

LOL! Umm, looks to me like some people actually DO watch DVDs on their computers! I've kept Windows 7. I just couldn't see any reason to get Windows 8. I know it comes pre-loaded on new computers though, so those buyers are stuck with it.

I'm going to look into getting Windows 7 back. Don't know if I can do it or not. As you know, I'm not much of a tekky.

One more reason I don't want Windows 8. If an OS is working, why do they keep messing with it?

Well? That was a cluster. Got in touch with my provider. They tried to remotely download something, corrupted all my files, and I had to reset my comp back to factory settings. That was fun.

I was afraid of that. That's why I posted that second link, but you must have logged off already. Your computer may not be geared to accept the change. You might try checking with your computer manufacturer to see what they've got to say.

Oh welllllllllll.........let me tell you...........
After getting on remote assistance, having them download some Power DVD 10., having something happen to "corrupt" my files, and having to sit all day waiting for my computer to reset to the factory settings, GUESS WHAT?
Now...I'm not completely stupid, so of course, I tried more than one DVD. Nothing worked. I finally got on tech assistance a little while ago. and ALL MY DVDS were BLUE RAY. So they won't play. How the heck am I suppose to know that? You'd think that hours and hours into all this somebody MIGHT have mentioned that? Do they just assume that I'm a not a total dumbass when it comes to this stuff. Cause I am. I finally put in a notblueray DVD and it played like a charm
I screamed and scared my dog.

Mmhmm? It WAS my computer manufacturer who I was on chat support with. I'll never be able to look them in the screen again.

*chuckle* Sounds like something that might happen to me, GEL! I'm glad you found out what was wrong, though. Now you can watch DVDs - and cuss Blueray.

I think Blue Ray is a new disc format, GEL. It's not really a DVD. It's something new and isn't supported by all the hardware yet.

That isn't the worst thing I've done. Right after I got my new laptop, I did some rearranging in my living room. Adapter was then plugged into a different outlet than usual. My laptop wouldn't charge. The light on the end of the adapter wouldn't light. My system said the battery health was fine. I had another adapter from an older laptop that was the same. I even tried that one. Nothing.
So I call and tell tech support that my laptop won't charge and that it isn't the adapter and it isn't the battery. They schedule a technician to come out since it's still under warranty.
I discover (or remember actually) moments later that the wall switch has to be turned on for that particular outlet to work. I flip the switch and VOILA! Charging!
I got the service call cancelled before they came out and were face-to-face with total dumbassery.

LOL! I had a similar experience. The outlets in the master bathroom and two in the bedroom ceased to function. At the same time, I had a problem with something else (don't remember what it was), so I'd already called my friendly fix-it fellows. They arrived and fixed the problem I'd called about. I mentioned the outlet problems. Guy goes into the bathroom, looks around for a minute, goes to my late husband's side of the bathroom and pushes the reset button on the outlet on his side. Instant power! It's magic! Yeah. Gah!

LOL! Yep! I sure felt like a total ditz for a minute or two, but I'm SO glad I remembered it before the poor guy/lady came and wasted their time. Sometimes, my "think" app gets corrupted.

Geez just as much fun as I had ordering running shoes from Sears. Two operators later, I dang got them ordered. Now why would Google tell me it's a 2 + hour train ride to get there when I know it's about a 30 minute bus ride.
This is the new age of useless information.

Blue Ray is the next format, only some aren't buying into it, like myself.
