Our town has a soup kitchen where restaurants and grocers donate their food.  They also get a large amount of produce from the community garden.  All the soup made is free.  The free soup kitchen also had to have a restaurant license so it is inspected.

Without looking at the link, I have to say that food "past date" and food "gone bad" are two different things.

Malarky - the food in the link is described as overstocked items for the most part - items stores want to rotate - get out of the store quickly to make room for fresh stock before it has to be tossed.

If there's a service that can use these items to help feed those who can't afford to buy fresh, or want to "eat on the cheap", then more power to them. It's better than the food ending up in the landfill if it's still edible.
