Without looking at the link, I have to say that food "past date" and food "gone bad" are two different things.

Malarky - the food in the link is described as overstocked items for the most part - items stores want to rotate - get out of the store quickly to make room for fresh stock before it has to be tossed.
If there's a service that can use these items to help feed those who can't afford to buy fresh, or want to "eat on the cheap", then more power to them. It's better than the food ending up in the landfill if it's still edible.

The Food Network did that last year to showcase how much waste there is in food per year, and how it could be utilized and not wasted. Anne Burrell and Bobby Flay were in the special.
