www.cbsnews.com/news/colo-teen-killed-by-stepfather-who-thought-she-was-a-burglar/
The station reports police got a call about a "burglary in progress"
The girl died after being taken to a hospital.
The stepfather hasn't been arrested and it will be up to prosecutors to decide whether charges should be filed. Colorado's so-called "Make My Day" law allows residents in many instances to forcefully defend themselves against home intruders.
Curious to see the facts on this one. Seems to me people are just a little to anxious to pull the trigger these days.

Very sad for sure. I wonder if this happens more than we know. This could have happened to me, my father is a gun nut sleeps with a gun (or at least used too) under his pillow with his shot gun not far away. I have come home late at night as a teenager and heard him calling out "who's there" knowing he was pointing a gun at me. Luckily he is a little more level headed than I give him credit for. So knowing there are teenagers in the house and knowing the nature of teenagers what person would shoot first and ask questions later. Seriously WTH

My thoughts again- I snuck in and out of the house as a teenager, had girlfriends over, etc. late at night. Thank God my dad was level headed as well- pointed a gun at one of my friends one night knocking on my window.
Will have to see what happened, but that could be the case- though I doubt it at 6AM. Have to say I am not a fan of any sort of automatic immunity- I think at a minimum someone should be able to back up their decision to pull the trigger. A rebuttable presumption would work. Want a gun for self defense- fine by me- but mistakes are on you.

It's a concern for me now. My parents have always had guns all over the place and now that it's just my dad left I'm wondering if he's starting to lose it a bit since I've really startled him a couple of times recently when I went to visit. They always had an open door policy with family and friends, but at this point I think I'll wait for him to answer the door.

If you have a cell-phone, and you're that concerned, you can always park your car or stand outside and call announcing that you're there and about to knock or ring the doorbel - for your safety as well as him not over-reacting to a "noise" outside.

I'm gonna have to go with C) There's more to this story. I don't know what of course, but it just smells. This is pure speculation and I have no evidence of anything, but it hasn't sat right with me since I read it. Maybe she was going to report abuse or something? I think some digging needs to happen- probably won't. There's just something about this story-- and stories like it-- that just don't seem right. Like there's something a little too convenient about an 'accidental' shooting due to 'mistaken identity'.
