HI! I am behind again on posting. Its a good thing all of my savings just goes automatically or I would never get a round to actually making the money go where it is suppose to! I love smartypig where I can have a whole bunch of goals and see what is in each of the accounts rather then having to spreadsheet a bunch of goals in one account! dvm07 3/1/14 2383.08 (1/1/14=$0 Goal=$12,700) Fund | Goals | Saved YTD | % Met | Roses | General Savings | $2,000 | $315.63 | 15.8% | | Car Needs | $500 | $0.00 | 0.0% | | Roth IRA | $5,500 | $1,000.00 | 18.2% | | Gifts | $500 | $60.99 | 12.2% | | Taxes | $1,200 | $223.37 | 18.6% | | House needs | $1,000 | $40.00 | 4.0% | | Travel | $2,000 | $743.09 | 37.2% | | Total | $12,700 | $2,383.08 | 18.8% | |

Hi all - So... 2014 has had a seriously rough start for DH and I. DH retired in 2013, started collecting a pension, and got a new job, while I got a promotion - even though we changed our withholding, it was nowheres near enough. :-( I had been counting on a hefty refund - and as it turns out, we *owe* in taxes almost exactly what I had thought we'd be getting back. So much for that pre-baby Carribean get-away I'd been hoping for. Add onto that some health concerns for DH, including an overnight hospital stay, with the possibility for back surgery on the horizon for him, and it's been a rough couple of months. I am 24 weeks along & all seems to be progressively "rather unremarkably" according to my doctor, which I will take as good news, for sure!!
The second piece of good news is that we paid off our second car - we are now debt-free with the exception of our mortgage. I would *not* have been so quick to pay it off if I had known about the tax/health/other nonsense going on, but our emergency fund is still intact thankfully, (as of right now), we're just cutting it significantly closer than I would otherwise like.
So, suffice it to say, our savings are going to be nowhere near what we had hoped this year. I had taken money from smaller buffer accounts to pay off the car, anticipating paying them back through February and March, however now those accounts sit empty while we save up the lump sum to pay our tax bill. Our biweekly automated savings are still progressing, but refilling those buffer accounts will take us into August at best (and well into my maternity leave). We are doing our best to reign in extraneous spending, but this year is not going as we had hoped. I take comfort though in knowing our cars are paid for though & we will come out of this on the plus side. Slowly, but surely, right?

tobinikui - You're not one to make excuses to rack up CC debt like some of my friends who create crises for themselves based on poor judgment and lack of self control. You and DH have a good head on your shoulders so I have every confidence that you'll make it thru this challenging time rather unscathed.

Hi Savers - My savings has not increased this month because I paid for a planned trip and a few unplanned expenses out of the funds earmarked for savings. I will update with the next paycheck towards the end of March.
I hope everyone is doing well.

So I've been thinking about this. The purpose of the weekly challenge is to gradually increase the amount you're saving so that it becomes automatic. I'm not there. I need about an extra 10k a year for trips, DS's wedding, GS1&2's band, & the holidays. So I've decided to stop individual goals and just look at the total number. It'll look different from now on

Already 49% met less than 1/4 of the year in Are you working PT again? I'm a little concern that my job may end 4/20/14. But I should be fine if it does & that'll give me more time to prep for 200 hungry mouths at DS's 5/24 wedding

At the moment, I work FT through the year and do a little PT work as an added bonus during the spring. I can't imagine planning a wedding during tax season! You're braver than I am!

Fortunately I do more forensic accounting than taxes this season. And the taxes are more corporate or fiduciary than 1040. Less stress

Rocky Mtn Saver, off 35c on 1st multi-million dollar estate but latter ones closer. Boss says I'm done. Actually happy to not be doing taxes this year. Wow. Today's race is looking more like drag racing ... multiple 'taps'

HappyCat: 3/18/14 $800.00 (3/18/14 $2,300.00) (Begin Balance in Savings as of 1/8/14 $1,500) I haven't made much progress in savings but I have made progress. I have a trip planned to Myrtle Beach, SC with my two adult daughters the first week of April. The condo rental is paid in cash, I have cash stashed for spending money but I still have a balance on my credit card for the plane tickets that I have to pay when the I receive the bill. I'm really excited about this trip as it is the first trip in over 3 years that is for pleasure and doesn't involve taking care of a sick parent. I would much rather have my parents but it is what it is. *sigh*. It is also the first trip my daughters and I have taken together in many years. They are 24 and 26 and I am looking forward to having them to myself for a few days. When we return from the trip I am going to work on the Christmas savings and then go back to my EF. i hope everyone is doing well and looking forward to Spring 2014!

Hi Everyone! It has been a difficult 6 weeks since I posted my last update. Lots of financial ups & downs- more downs than anything!! I had to make a few adjustments to my table, we had to borrow money from our Renovation fund, and I will be paying a huge medical bill and using a big chunk of the emergency fund this week. Next month's update will not look so good, but hopefully I will have some of that money replaced before I update again. I hope everyone is doing well! I will try to do some past reading after I get this posted
