This has happened a LOT of times over the past 5-10 years. MOST companies, as I recal, bought a credit monitoring membership for ALL those affected. Guess Target is too CHEAP to do this for the huge number of people involved.
I don't happen to be affected since Walmart was cheaper for my wants but if I had been it would have ONLY been my Target cc which I got for the 5% discount. I can EASILY live without a Target cc.

I visited Target between the dates reported, but used cash. And I am so glad I did. (I only had a four dollar purchase.)

I swear but not off cc. I get a 1% to 5% dividend on what I purchase. It's paid off monthly.

what I want to know is if the data is encrypted or if it's just sitting behind a firewall and anti virus software. if it's not encrypted, why not?

We didn't find ANY deals on ANYTHING in St. Marten so bought nothing except food. I'm expecting Cayman to be the same. I think the deals to be had are maybe on booze and cigarettes, none of which I'll be buying. Tourists need to know their prices before buying. I watched a woman pay more for a piece of Swarovski than she would have paid in the states by $5. Same piece. When I mentioned it, the clerk got all huffy and said the customer saved sales tax. Whoop de doo.
