Anybody ever have an issue with their laptops where they are typing, and suddenly the cursor jumps to another point in the screen? For example, I'm typing a sentence, and then BAM! I'm 2 paragraphs back and have highlighted a whole paragraph and replaced it with the end of the word I was typing? Its happening with my work laptop right now.
I know I'm not grazing the actual touchpad. I have one of those Dell models with 3 different sets of touch mechanisms... One is the "pencil eraser" looking thing (I tried pulling that off and it didn't help). The second set of buttons is just below the spacebar, and the set I use is below the touchpad.
Any suggestions on how to make it stop? It doesn't happen with my personal laptop.

Yes, and no....the only thing I can think of is to use another keyboard. It happens with my Lenovo, drives me nuts.
I've tried disconnecting the mouse pad, thinking that I may have grazed it with my thumb, but that didn't work.

I have an ASUS laptop that I frequently have this problem with. The touchpad is incredibly sensitive and all it takes is the slightest brush with the base of my thumb and *BAM* everything is gone. I find it much easier to blame the angry bear than my clumsy fingers

yep. I've never plugged a mouse into the Dell laptop I have at home. I find that the only thing that "fixes" the problem is to close down all applications and reopen. sometimes it requires a reboot.
sorry.....it definitely sucks.

Mine does that too sometimes. My Dell laptop does the same thing, glad to know I'm not the only one this happens to.

I'm actually using my arc mouse at the moment, but most of the time I work directly on the laptop. I don't have my own desk. I'm not lugging a keyboard.
I do wonder if turning the sensitivity down will help. I'm not sure I have sufficient privileges to access that setting. These blasted things are really locked tight.

From Control Panel, choose Mouse, choose Dell Touchpad, choose Device Select, it give disable/enable options. I'm on Windows 7, but it's similar for XP, I don't know about 8.

This happens on my home HP laptop frequently and once in a while on my work HP laptop. I only have the touchpad for the mouse on my home HP, and my mouse will jump around even when I don't touch the touchpad. And I'm so glad I'm not the only one with this issue!

I have a Dell netbook in which I had to disable the click feature of the touchpad, i.e., double-tapping would equal a left mouse click. I usually used a mouse with the netbook, although I could still use the touchpad. I just had to manually press the bottom left corner to get a left mouse click.
I got a 15" Toshiba laptop about 6 weeks ago and have been getting used to the touchpad. It's much better than my Dell netbook. However, I disable the double-tapping feature when I'm using File Explorer. It's too easy to move or delete directories with double-tapping enabled. Fortunately there's an icon in the system tray which makes turning that on and off very easy.

Love my new Thinkpad Yoga with the touch pad. It has a number of Windows 8 gestures that makes Windows 8.1 more workable.

My Dell did that. My Toshiba with Windows 8 annoys me to the end of the earth and back. I connected a mouse, almost immediately and been the better for it.

I read somewhere that this is a problem with Dells. Apparently, if you rest your left hand on the laptop next to the touch pad, it causes an unintentional connection that makes the cursor jump.
Learn to type with your hands not resting on the laptop.

Yeah, I definitely have that problem with my dell. At first I tried just adjusting the sensitivity, but ended up just disabling the thing. I think there is a setting to disable when mouse not connected, so you're not SOL if you are traveling and you left hte mouse at home.
I actually prefer those little buttons in the middle of the keyboard to control the mouse.
