Ooh, that reminds me of growing up all the wealthy little old ladies in church would have these mink or fox stoles that had the taxidermied heads of the mink/fox still attached. Creepy.

My great aunt stayed in the bedroom that I normally slept in at my grandmother's house. She left one of these on the hook of the inside closet door. I opened the door, saw the eyes and screamed like a banshee! Brought the whole house running. I must have been all of 6 or so but still remember that like it was yesterday.

Why in the world would anyone want, let alone make, anything like that?

My Mom had one of those. It had little bodies of some furry crittesr that she wore around her shoulders. It was worn when she had on a suit for Church. The fastener was the head of one of them...I'm thinking it was an alligator clip but I guess it could have been real teeth. My Mom always said it was kalinskys (?)

A Kolinsky sable-hair brush (also known as red sable or sable hair brush) is a fine artists' paintbrush. The hair is obtained from the tail of the kolinsky (Mustela sibirica), a species of weasel rather than an actual sable; I was curious so I looked it up.

I still have the mink stoll that my Grandmother wore. It's hanging on the wall of my house right next to an old deer head. I put it on from time to time to remember the old days. I will loan it out to you gals if you want to borrow it.

I actually don't have an issue with mink coats (minks are a nasty animal that are best used as a coat, same thing with an alligator - best used for shoes), it was the freaky taxidermied heads with those awful glass eyes that were creepy.

In addition to the "weasel" that my Mom wore, she had a grey mink stole, a white mink bubble cape, and a 3rd one I can't remember. I had a shirred beaver jacket with a stand up mink collar. Oh those were the days..............You dressed up to go shopping or to dinner, gloves were always worn, and sometimes a hat was appropriate. Ladies dressed like ladies, gentlemen wore suits when going out to dinner. Men removed their hats indoors, always helped a lady with her coat and held the door for her, including opening the car door, and a gentleman walked on the outside of the sidewalk to protect his lady.

Why in the world would anyone want, let alone make, anything like that? I don't know... but when I was a tourist down in New Orleans there were all sorts of alligator 'body part' souvenirs available. As a joke I bought an alligator foot on a stick - a back scratcher, but then I couldn't sleep with it in the hotel room-- it was just so creepy - the things that B-Movie Nightmares are made of. I wound up putting it in my luggage (cause what you can't see can't hurt you). ::shudder:: I've seen plenty of the fox and 'weasel' stoles and what not at estate sales over the years. Most of my city's housing stock was built between 1920's and the mid 1950's so the last 20 years or so have seen a turn over in houses and LOTS of estate sales as the original generation of home buyers moved away or died. I really like the old time ladies hats... I sometimes find at the sales. I can't imagine having to match up a hat with my outfit to go grocery shopping Some of the hats I've seen were quite lovely or just darn cute.

I inherited my mother's mink coat, worth many, many thousands of dollars. I never wear it, as I feel guilty and little kids might throw paint at me. I remember wearing a fur hat one day at our version of 7-11. It was about minus 30 that day. I had a bunch of first graders approach me and say "Lady, is that real fur?!? It better not be!!" I would never go out and buy a fur coat, as that creates a demand and encourages more killing. I don't know what to do with this coat, though. If I toss it, all those little critters would have died in vain. If I give it to the Salvation Army, what difference does it make if I wear it, or someone else does?

I immediately thought of the little beady-eyed stoles, too! My mother has a mink stole my grandmother won in a church raffle. (Yeah, we come from old money. ) She keeps asking me if I want it and I just can't get interested. I saw a young lady at The Nutcracker wearing one with an outfit that included a very short skirt and it looked kind of cute, but I'd look like an old lady in an outdated mink stole.

My uncle scraped together every last penny and bought my aunt a fur. She wore it when she hung the laundry...outside...in the winter...in Philadelphia. It kept her warm. She also used to put it on when she had to go to the cellar, which was icy cold. In reality, fur coats can be quite practical in a very cold climate. Too bad you are criminal for wearing them.

I have this purse or one almost exactly like it. Same color, same little head and little teeth. I bought it at a flea market when I was in my 20's and I bet I used that purse for almost 10 years. It's probably still here somewhere but I think I scuffed his head up or something and stopped using it.

My experience of organized religion will forever be tied to the smell of mothballs and the beady little eyes staring over the back of the pew in front of me. I really, really want to get one of those from a resale shop but every one I find is shedding worse than a collie with mange.

Purses like that were all the rage back in about the 1940's I believe. They moved quite well when late DH & I had an antique store. I think I still have 1 or 2.

Colleenz and anyone else who wants to look, here's the link to the purse auction As of right now the bidding is at $23 with 5 days to go. I just don't get the appeal - I think it's a hideous looking little thing.

We raise chickens and cows for beef and eggs. IMHO unless you are vegan, don't own leather anything etc. you have absolutely no moral grounds to critize someone for wearing fur. (posted from the frozen trundra where it's been below zero with the wind chill already several days this month).

Are you all out of your minds? Everyone who eat HOT DOG must shut up and let people be! Plus those expensive critters do not deserve that fur anyhow! P.S. I do not wear leather nor fur. I love camel hair and lama's hair and...too bad no one uses pubic hair

If I worked in NYC or downtown Chicago I'd probably own a fur coat by now. They're beautiful and yes, they're warm. It doesn't fit my life here, though. Anyplace I wore it here, whether to the office or to church, it would just look ostentatious. I have a wonderful camel hair coat that's older than DS and it's just fine on very cold days.
When DH's mother went to owrk in a munitions factiry in WW 2, she was supposed to be saving up the money she made and the money her husband sent back from the war to buy a house. She spent a huge portion of it on a fur coat. The marriage survived but DH spent his early years in a house with outdoor plumbing.
