GW1 & I are going to Busan, South Korea in March. We will stay with my cousin while we are there. I want to get a visit to Tokyo in as well. If I get a return ticket, and on the return portion there is a connection in Tokyo, do I have to get on the plane in Busan? Or am I allowed to go to Tokyo a few days ahead of time and get on the flight there?

I wish I had an answer for you, later. Years ago you could buy open tickets (they did cost more) so you could change things on the fly. I don't think that's done anymore, though. I'd check with my travel agent and ask how to do what you want to do. If you get discounted tickets it might not be possible.

I have no idea - but couldn't someone at the airline tell you?

Hmmm. I've bought tickets that end at a different place, but lay over in the place I want, so just get off and not use the rest of the ticket, but never hop on in the middle... I'd think it would work? But I probably would check to make sure...

So, it has a name... Hidden city ticketing.... Is your ticket round trip? ... What airline is it with?

I think what later wants to do would be better served by an open jaw ticket, but I'm not sure. I'd check with the airline, or a travel agent just to be on the safe side.

For international trips, it's not always more expensive to land and depart from different places, so have you checked out just buying the ticket for the cities you want? We actually did that on a round-trip US flight last year - we needed to fly in to NYC and out of DC, and we bought the tickets on the same airline so they were basically round trip prices.

If you have a ticket from Busan to Canada with a layover in Tokyo and you don't board the flight in Busan, the airline will almost certainly cancel your ticket. If you haven't purchased them yet, you can do a "multiple destination" ticket on most online sites like expedia, orbitz, etc.
Example:
Depart May 1, Toronto- Busan
Depart May 8, Busan- Tokyo
Depart May 12, Tokyo- Toronto
It's not always more expensive, so maybe check that option if you haven't already purchased. I've done it tons of times and it saves a lot of back tracking.

Thanks guys, I did manage to get my layover. It cost me about $150 extra per ticket but is so worth it. I feel more secure with it being on the itinerary. I'm so looking forward to this trip.

I'm glad to hear you were able to work it out so you can make the trip as you wish it to be. Next order of business is to have a great time!
