drugs? ETA didn't he have a serious drug problem a couple of seasons ago? Yeah, but I think most of it was prescription that he got from the pharmacy... Maybe I'm just crazy, but isn't the hospital non profit?

OMG. Love Mary Tyler Moore.
There are a few episodes where she discloses her income and budget and I eat it up...kinda fascinating to see how times have changed.
Mary's apartment was reasonable but her wardrobe was not. She would wear Dior and Chanel and all kinds of exclusive designer clothes(though she did wear clothes more than once on the show, more so in later than earlier seasons) that no one on her salary could afford. However---her dad was a rich/well known surgeon. And she was an only child, unmarried...I always chalked her up to getting money from daddy for when she wanted money until later when she was promoted to Producer.
Phylis Whips Inflation, in the 5th season, has a lot of personal finance related discussions--Phylis talks about a $400 coat I think which would be about $1600 in today's dollars roughly. I also love the one where Rhoda is fired and goes on unemployment, and where Mary tries to change jobs because she can't make her budget work. Ted and Gordie's salary come up in a few episodes as well-with Ted first making $31,000 and later in the 40s, while Gordie in New York is up to $250,000 a year when he comes back in season 7.

He actually says this in one episode. Wilson asks him to repay a loan and House immediately writes a check. He explains that he never really needed the loan, he'd just been borrowing increasing amounts from Wilson to see how much he could get away with.
Also, House's family is very wealthy, so I doubt he had many student loans.

Loreli's parents gave Rory money. I don't know if they gave Loreli anything, and I think Chirs's parents were also rolling it and probably "helped" support their grandchild.

Loreli's parents gave Rory money. I don't know if they gave Loreli anything, and I think Chirs's parents were also rolling it and probably "helped" support their grandchild. Well since her grandmother was going to set up a trust fund for Rory in Season 1, I always figured Lorelai had one too and probably used it to help buy that house. Afterall, an inn manager doesn't make much more than $35k and CT isn't a cheap place to live - especially when you eat out as much as they did. No matter how frugal she might have been, that lifestyle had to have some extra funding from somewhere. ETA: Don't forget all the movie rentals too and this was before Redbox so you figure at least $3 a movie. It adds up.
