I was just joking... she wrote PMs and it made me giggle. It was early at the time ;D
The book ending just felt so contrived to me. As a writer myself, I know that you really have to watch out for writing an ending that does not sound real just so you can work in a clever plot twist or make some kind of point. A consistent weakness of Picoult's. I've learned a lot from her work.

In reference to King of Queens, UPS drivers actually make really good money. Where I live in LCOLA Iowa they make $30+ per hour. Plus they don't pay a dime in health, dental, life, vision, or disability ins. They also have extremely generous pension benefits. I don't know anything about Long Island? real estate but it seems possible that they could have a comfortable lifestyle. The inaccurate part is that they make his job seem easy. Drivers work their a$$ off! And FYI I have never seen a chunky UPS driver. ...:::"Speaking of Friends, I actually like the early episode where Ross, Chandler and Monica (the have's) go out for Monica's birthday with Rachel, Phoebe and Joey (the have not's) and they go to split the bill evenly and the poorer friends complain because they only ordered salad and water or something. It reflected accurately I think some of the nights out I've had when I mix my professional friends with my non-professional friends":::...
Oh yes, that episode has some EXCELLENT lines that I think anyone in that situation can relate to. Ex.
Rachel: "I'll have an.... ummm.... side salad". Waiter: "What do you want that on the side of?" Rachel: "Err... right on the side of my water glass!"
Joey: "If I get the pizza without all these toppings, will it cost less? Waiter: "You would think so"
And then the real kicker that I'm sure anyone in the above situation encountered at some point. When they are calculating how to split the bill:
Ross: That'll be <x> each. Have-nots: looking uncomfortable... Ross, aren't you forgetting something? Ross: Ohhhhh right. Its Monica's big night, SHE shouldn't pay! OK, the new total is <bigger>!

Just look at a "regular" house, double or even triple the price, and that is HCOL real estate. Things in general are very expensive, and Long Island in particular is EXTREMELY crowded. $30/hour is in the $50k to $60k region. If that is the household income, it is only so/so.

I have always had the theory that both of the Brady's first spouses died under unusual circumstances, leaving them with lots of life insurance money. I thought it was really weird that these kids just latched onto their step-parent and never mentioned their original father/mother again. The more I think about that show - the creepier it is. IIRC, both the Brady's formers spouses died. Nothing unusual about it. This was late 60's/early 70's. There was some talk about having them be divorced but divorce was still a little frowned upon back then. LOL I also thought an architect made decent money as a kid and never could understand why they had 6 kids in 2 bedrooms!

She was also a paralegal or legal security in a high powered NYC law firm. I think she worked for a partner. They make more than chump change.

I am not a writer, so, I don't look at it from "artistic' side, but I thought the movie ending was OK. The book ending, to me, had kind of weird, a bit creepy twist, so I liked that.

What does this mean? I keep seeing it. Usually I can figure out the acronyms through context but this one consistently puzzles me.

The Brady Bunch house wasn't that nice- all 3 boys had to share a room and all 3 girls had to share a room- then all 6 had to share a bathroom. That's pretty modest. I did wonder why they needed a maid when all 6 kids were school age and Mrs. Brady didn't workThere was no reason for those kids to be stuffed into two bedrooms. There was plenty of room in that house. Consider all the ways in which they could have spread out. Greg eventually got the attic, remember? Fire Alice and take her room which was some mystery place beyond the laundry room. Unless the laundry room was her bedroom. LOL. But she sometimes came out in a bathrobe and curlers, so she lived there. and finally, Mr. Brady could give up his den. The t.v room can convert to a room rental ;D with it's own private entry. Then there's always Tiger's house which could be converted. LOL.

I'm not sure at what point, but I stopped watching Gilmore Girls. Probably around the time when Lorelai left Luke for Christopher just to make way for more drama for the final season that the show's creators had declined to participate in. But I recall that in a late season (season 6 maybe?) Luke had offered to pay for something for Lorelai that cost a ridiculous amount of money...I'm not sure if that was in addition to the house he intended to purchase to live in with Lorelai or not.
On the plus side, I thought I'd mention an old fave (have not watched a series since Gilmore Girls), I really loved the clothing consistency in ER's first couple of season. I recall Hathaway having the same backpack for the first three seasons and the same cardigan. Nice touch.

I don't remember Luke buying anything significant for Lorelai (and believe me, I know that show much, much better than anyone should), unless you are thinking of the loan he gave her for the inn. He was planning to purchase a huge house for them to live in, that's true.
It's kind of understood on that show that Luke is supposed to have money, even though he runs a small-town diner and you wouldn't expect anyone doing that to make very much.

I recall an episode where they needed an extra room for something (maybe for Greg to have his own room?) and Carol gasped at the suggestion that the family room be used. "Give up my family room?" she said. Mike had almost the same reaction to the suggestion he give up his den.

Not a movie. But, I am enjoying "Hot in Cleveland". However, I cannot wrap myself around the premise that Victoria is supposedly a movie star of 20+ yrs, is being put up for an Emmy but living in an avg house in Cleveland shopping at the Big Easy. If she was totally washed up looking to regain fame, that would make sense, but it doesn't make sense to me the way it is being portrayed so I do have to get past that for the sense of "reality" for good comedy. I love that show. You must have missed the episode where her manager stole her money and she is now broke.

Thanks Firebird, I was thinking of the loan he gave her for the inn. Secretly, Luke must be a YM-mer to have that much money saved. I agree that SATC was entirely unrealistic on more than one level, probably even more so when considering the amount of time they had for men and "hobbies".

daylight: Luke probably would have been a YMer. He drove a paid for pick up truck through out the entire 7 seasons of the show. Lived well below his means in an apartment above the diner. He inherited the entire building from his dad. He wore the same clothes season after season. His only vice seemed to be fishing (in a boat that was probably paid for as well). I loved that show- but given the amount of money that Lorelai and Rory spent eating out and on clothes they would have ended up on WIR or YM looking for budgeting advice

do you know how much a house like they had would cost? About $750,000 easy (that is a conservative number) and then the property taxes, water bill, etc. etc......
also not only does Queens have Federal and state taxes, they also have city taxes

I loved that show- but given the amount of money that Lorelai and Rory spent eating out and on clothes they would have ended up on WIR or YM looking for budgeting advice ROFL! So true. I always thought it was possible she was getting child support from Christopher though. I know he had a sketchy job history and wasn't really in Rory's life at first, but you would have expected Richard to make completely sure that kid stepped up and took care of his daughter, financially if nothing else. I guess Luke could have been wealthy, Sheila, when you put it that way. He certainly lived like a YMer. It's just hard for me to believe that an independent business owner would have made all that much in such a tiny little town. I watched an episode just recently where Kirk was supposed to have $250,000 in cash. His explanation was that he had been working for 17 years at many different jobs and had saved every penny he ever made. I wasn't impressed. Even without earning a single penny from interest, that's less than $14,000 per year. Less than I made working part time in a small-town diner in Pennsylvania. He should have had much more than that if he really worked as many jobs as they implied and didn't have any living expenses.

Even if he has money, I'd figure that House prefers to manipulate others into spending money for him.
Between addictions, run-ins with the law and other repeated downward spirals, he's probably in debt. Last season he left his job for rehab, which meant that he had no income, plus that facility was probably very expensive
I also wouldnt be surprised though if his paycheck doesnt match his qualifications. They've said on the show in the past that Cuddy is the only one who would put up with his shenanigans, so he wouldnt be able to get a job anywhere else.

For me it was Star Trek, where humanity had transcended the need for money and people in the Federation focused on the betterment of the human race and culture. But then would randomly talk about paying credits for something. They were really inconsistant.

I watched a Mary Tyler Moore marathon this weekend (I had a cold). She lived in a bachelor apartment and paid $150/month. And she wore her clothes more than once. They actually seemed pretty realistic about a lot of things. Including the office space. Wasn't That Girl about the same time? She had the great apartment and designer clothes.

I totally loved Married with Children, and I know they tried to portray the Bundy's as a poor working class family, but considering he sold shoes for minimum wage, and supported a family of 4 in a big house in Chicago, with his wife shopping all the time, well...lets just say I wasn't buying it! I still love it though! usually a comedy will have examples of unrealistic money. But for TV shows I agree Married with Children is up there.
