Either way they failed.

Not just the CIA, their counterparts for every country with leaders there. That guy wasn't just up there for Obama's speech. And Obama is not the only or even most targetted world leader there.

What I understand is that this man was legitimate and had every right to be there and his security pass was valid.

He does however suffer from schizophrenia and was having an episode while standing there, he knew he was in trouble when he "saw angels".
He reported that usually when he sees angels he becomes violent, he looked around and saw all the armed guards etc and was basically panic stricken and his mind was blank as he tried to sign.
He feels horrible about it and I feel badly for him as well.

I could read some of it.  It was "I speak from my heart to you".  "From heaven above and the earth below".  There were a couple of more that I didn't really get but they did mean something.  "We come together".

I knew I should have taken the online sign language course.  It's free through our online library resources.

While I haven't seen any of the video yet, it seems this guy while
not being in control kept it together enough to not fall completely
apart. I give him credit for being aware enough to keep more
control over himeself than he might have otherwise.


Since we don't know whether his violence in the past resulted in
permanent injuries or deaths I'm not going to assume he was a big
danger to any world leader. Per the article it appears he was put in
a tougher spot than most interpreters and they hired someone on the cheap.



I hope he does OK in the future and am not surprised that whatever
company he was working for doesn't want to be found.

You think it's "hilarious" that our President was well within arms length of a self-described violent schizophrenic who was, at the time, hearing voices and seeing "angels"?  I find it an outrage.  I think any of the SS that even made a phone call regarding this trip should be fired- the whole bunch.  Can you imagine the President of the United States being attacked by a madman- maybe even killed- while the whole world looked on? This is truly horrific.  Terrible.  Inexcusable.  It cries out for meaningful accountability.

I'm sorry but yes! With all the hyper vigilance and airport searches and profiling etc etc etc a guy with a history of mental illness and violence gets onstage with dozens of world leaders at the high security event of the decade. That is priceless!!!

I have no problem with the situation. It is not like it was a 1950's summit conference between the U.S. and Russia, or something.

It was a celebration of a world leader's life in an African country still trying to regain it's homeland security forces.

If it was still run by the white minority of just a couple of decades ago, the security would have been top notch, and there would have been complaints of Gestapo security tactics.

I do think this proves that AQ and other groups are pretty much silenced on the world stage and stuck in the back alleys of third world countries right now. This could have been an excellent time to strike, whether against the President, or the world in general.

Of course it might be interesting if the President had anything to say on the plane ride back to D.C. about it.

I understand his limo was even stuck in a traffic jam on the way to the event.

Now that was a breach of security that should not have happened.

You do know that the CIA and Secret Service aren't the same, don't you? CIA = Central Intelligence Agency are spies and clandestine operations while the Secret Service is in charge of the president's security (as well as counterfeiting_. The CIA would have nothing to do with any security arrangements concerning the president or other world leaders.

The first agency at fault is South Africa's. They would be the ones that passed on people having access to are area. The Secret Service's activities would amount to mainly guarding the president's physical person.
