I've never used CL to buy or sell "stuff". I'm pretty cautious / paranoid (you choose LOL). But I don't like inviting strangers to my home or telling them where I live. My close friend's neighbor's son put his really expensive sneakers up on CL, very worn (on his own initiative, he did NOT vet it with his parents, obviously). Well they sold, at asking price. One week later the house was robbed. Maybe a coincidence, maybe not. Again, you choose LOL. We take our old stuff to the Salvation Army. I'd rather take my old stuff there than have people I don't know from Adam pick it up, but maybe that's just me. If I did sell stuff, I'd make an appt on the street or something. I don't like the idea of encouraging strangers on the internet to come by my house. I'm sure the majority of people out there are honest, but, some are not, and I'd rather not invite them to my home. I'd happily meet them on a street, at my job, at a parking lot, at a Starbucks, whatever, but not at home. THIS.

You don't have to have people come to your home (or go to theirs) to buy on CraigsList. I usually meet them at the mall. We do the exchange in the parking lot. I guess it is the type of stuff I buy . . . slipcovers, for example . . . but I've never been worried that someone would mug me.

I've sold tons of stuff on CL. If it's a portable item, I always arrange to meet the person in a public place, but I've also sold tons of furniture that had to be picked up at my house. Yes, I am a little wary of "strangers" coming to my house, especially since I am a single female living alone. You don't have to sell to anyone that gives you the heebie jeebies. I often don't even respond to emails that sound like wackos. I've had really good luck getting rid of stuff. We don't even have a "" and our trash service doesn't take large items, so, it can be a real PITA to get rid of big, older stuff you no longer want. I rarely freecycle though...that I do feel is too much of a hassle.

I bought something on Craig's list and my husband said "Oh, I'll stay here, why don't you go down and pick it up." The item cost $200. So, yah, honey, I'm not going to go to some guy's house that neither of us knows with $200 cash in my pocket.

DH and I once went to buy a trailer off CL. The guy asked us to pick it up around 10 at night. It turns out the address was for this storage facility. We were totally freaked out to be sitting in this row of buildings that looked abandoned at night, with $2.5k on us in cash. Eventually this guy drove up in a total beater and all of the sudden all these lights started turning on, big garage doors started rolling up and people started walking around.
Turns out that there were a ton of people living in these storage units against their lease rules. It was in a HCOL area and these units were meant to store boats, be places to work on cars, etc. They'd built second stories into them.
But seriously - don't go alone if you have a lot of money on you or if you are buying baby stuff. A woman in my town was killed and someone tried to take her baby out of her to keep when she was buying stuff on CL.
