I bought a couple of slipcovers for two chairs-and-a-half plus an ottoman from CraigsList for $40 total. No stains, no rips, machine washable . . . flawless.
These are still available on Pottery Barn's website in the color I got (natural). The ottoman costs $299 and each chair is $549. These are for the slipcovers only. It assumes you already owned the furniture.
She didn't like the color so she bought another set.

The former owner probably thought she was "slumming it" by even bothering to list them on CL LOL.
Good for you!
My niece in NYC bought a year-old $3000 couch for $750 from CL.

Wow, maybe Phil can post how much that $1497 would be worth in 30 years, if the CL seller had exchanged those slipcovers instead of ordering a new color. LOL
and totally kidding, Phil, I love your wealth-building advice.......

What a great deal!'m excited for you southernsusana! I'm wondering why she just didn't buy all new furniture if she has that kind of money to blow on slip covers though. I'm thinking I could find a pretty nice chair for $500.

Elizabeth, you think like I do. But if Pottery Barn is selling these for this price, people are buying them (obviously).
It was funny. She said, "I don't know if you know much about Pottery Barn, but I have this thing for it." Obviously.
I did have to pay $30 to buy new pillows since their chair-and-a-half has two pillows and mine has one large one. But it looks awesome.

$549 for a slip cover is expensive LOL Aren't they usually (for a good one) like $100 or so?

10%? You know Phil only uses 11 or 12 percent! I think he usually posts the normal long term returns as 10% or 12% but when doing the math, he usually figures it at 11%.

Thyme, do a search on Pottery Barn's website (I tried to post it with no luck) for Charleston slipcovers. Natural is actually the CHEAPEST in that line.

Then they wonder why they have no money left when they turn 65. !!! $1,000 furnished my entire study. Desk, chair, credenza, 2 bookcases & a new computer. And had some money left over! Try estate sales. All the furniture are antiques, except the computer table, and all are solid wood.

$549 to 1 grand for a slip cover? OMG What is that old saying? "A fool and their money are soon parted."

I am sorry, but I don't believe this story for a sec. If you pay $850 for some covers, no way you would be listing them on CL for pennies. Why would you even bother? You would either give them to your maid to make some uniforms or your 5 yr old DD to play dress up or something. Or.... you would return/exchange them in the store. You either don't care about that $850 or you don't. If you care, you won't be selling it for $40 and if you don't, you won't be selling it for $40.

Riiight, bc there is no way on this planet that someone can actually afford it and enjoys spending money on the things the like. Since YOU don't get it, they, of course, have to be a fool Lena

Sorry Lena, we could easily afford it. But the differnce is, we choose not to waste it. Money that is.

Just bc it's a waste to you, doesn't mean it's a waste to other people. And I never said that you can't afford it. I can guarantee you 100%, without knowing anything about you that there are things that you spend money on that someone else will find very foolish and consider it a waste. So what? As long as you are spending YOUR money, who cares?

As long as you are spending your money I agree. However, when you are spending other peoples money, by borrowing on credit, then default with bankrupcy, it becomes our money spent, not theirs. I already had a few spendthrift friends from college do this. They really get to me. Then they feel entitled to do it all over again. That gets to me even more. grrrrr

Lena, I did buy it this so you might as well believe it. I was also stunned, but I was just making a purchase. She said, "I'm not sure you are familiar with Pottery Barn . . . " I actually told her that, yes, I researched the item and they even had directions for how to install it.
Maybe she had listed it a couple of times on CraigsList already. You honestly have to have a couple of chairs-and-a-half' to be interested. Even then, I had to buy two pillows (actually four) to replace my one back pillow because of the different design. Everything else was fine. Fortunately, Hancock had them 50% off this week. But I can see where she might have had trouble selling it for a higher price.
I was more amazed that she didn't like the "color." Who can't work with vanilla?

Lol, Blackcard. Not my favorite color, either, but I can definitely work with it give the other large upholstered pieces in the room. I am working in the basement where old furniture goes to die.

DH is a chocoholic. It would be washed daily. Then there is our cat. And the dog. I shudder to think. A priceless slip cover that I would have to cover with something else, to keep it nice. Did I ever mention all our fabric funiture is dark colors, including the leather? Now you know why.

Susana,
oh no, no, no, it's not YOUR story I don't believe. But there is just something odd about something spending $850 and then listing for $40 - doesn't worth the time.

Wow, you might have some special powers to know that this person was buying on credit and will be filing for BK soon. Why else would you be calling her a fool.
