Yeah, BG, if it was me and I had DH's history, the surgery would already be scheduled.... I am not a risk taker (not that he is, but he is awfully tired of surgery, needles, radiation burns, tests, and doctors in general) GG....I DO understand where your DH is coming from. Last year, when my second hip wound up infected, the absolute last thing that I wanted was to be stuck back into the hospital and go through another surgery. Especially since for my first removal, I was in the hospital for a total of 20 days, rehab another 21 days and I was *just* beginning to feel human again after 3 months....hell, I could *finally* go to the bathroom by myself! I did not want to go through that again. However, in my case there was no option. The second prosthesis was infected too and there was a fear that that would go back and reinfect the first hip spacer. I think your husband may come around when he thinks about it. It may take a few weeks, but it's a lot to process.

My FIL chose to wait after a high PSA test. They were all freaking out and insisting my FIL have part of his colon removed meaning he'd have to wear a bag the rest of his life. He said no. DH is pissed, MIL is in tears over his refusal etc.
This makes no sense. PSA is prostate, why would his colon have to be removed? PSA is a horribly insensitive diagnostic test, I think it needs to be used with other things as well.

I don't know to be honest. We get information filtered thru my MIL who doesn't understand and is a huge hypochodriac. I think they did a colonscopy after the PSA test and "found something" what that was I have no idea.
All I know is MIL was calling us and the other kids in hysterics and annoucing FIL needed to have his colon removed. Then she called us in hysterics saying he refused and would have the situation monitored.
Considering he is now fine it's a good thing he didn't go along with MIL's hysteria.

I agree. I think Jan 9, gives him some time to reflect. And I'm hoping that the oncologist will have some helpful perspectives.

My guess is they will surgically remove the thyroid and use radioactive iodine to ablate the nodule... that is, if there is a treatment recommendation.
Replacing thyroid medications is really not too big of deal in the grand scheme of things. I've treated plenty of people in the 20s, 30s, with thyroid ablation. It's better than cancer.

The thing is, they don't know if it IS cancer. Should he have it removed based on a suspicious nodule? Biopsy came back as "indeterminate".

If your DH didn't have a history of cancer, it might make sense to wait and see. Only problem is that he DOES have this history and that kind of throws a monkey wrench into this.

Didn't your H have a PET scan awhile ago? If he did, you should check the report to see what was said about the thyroid.
If he didn't, he could get one and that will definitely add evidence to whether the thyroid is hot or not.

honeybbq, Yes he did have a PET scan last March. I', looking at it right now. Nothing was said about the thyroid. Other than noting the mass that they took out, the wording is "No additional PET positive lung nodules, mediastinal mass or adenopathy is present. No findings of intra-abdominal malignancy or adenopathy is present"....
PS would the thyroid have been included in the PET scan? It says "PET/CT Imaging, skull base to mid-thigh"

Your thyroid sits in your neck, so it should have been included.
The PET scan was done 9 months ago....I'm guessing that things could change that fast.

GG -- Glad that DH is onboard with the oncologist visit in January. Best wishes for a resolution soon, one way or the other.

GG For you, and as soon as I am back from my family visit, I'll go back into pretzel mode, crossing every part of me that I can cross. Until then that creaking you hear all the way from my visit to the PNW will be my joints trying to adjust to their natural state!

Best wishes to you and your husband, GG, no matter what he decides. I do hope that he decides to have the nodule removed.

I'm sure you already know this GG, but make sure that the path report and any other pertinent information gets sent to your onco before your appointment.
I recently changed cardiologists, and cardio #1 seems to be reluctant to send all my records to # 2. There has been a second request made, but I haven't followed up on that request yet.

Agree with mich - that PET sounds clean for the neck but things can change quickly, especially when multiple cancers are present.

BG, Excellent suggestion. I do plan to hand carry our copies, but it would be better to make sure everything is there ahead of time.
