www.today.com/news/waitress-denied-tip-gay-lifestyle-gets-flood-support-2D11603655I'm beginning to wonder if this is some sort of trend in the homophobe community. Not sure if its a way to not leave a tip or what. It seems to me they are actively looking for gay servers so they can stiff them and leave a message. What do you think? New Jersey waitress Dayna Morales was expecting a tip after serving a party of four on Wednesday, but instead, she found a hurtful handwritten note.
“I’m sorry but I cannot tip because I do not agree with your lifestyle and the way you live your life," the note read.
Deeply offended, Morales, who is a lesbian, posted the receipt to Facebook, and then sent it to LGBT group Have a Gay Day's Facebook page, where it racked up over 3,000 comments and quickly made its way around the web.
Morales said the incident began when she introduced herself to the table of customers — a couple and their two children. She says the woman commented on her appearance by saying, "I thought your name was going to be Dan." But there was no further discussion of her sexuality during the meal, and Morales says she never even told them that she's a lesbian.
"I brushed it off and continued to serve them," she said. "No words were given back and forth. It was like a normal table."

She should be fired for posting the couples personal information on the internet.

I think she should have blacked out the signature on the receipt, but other than that what personal information of their's did she put on the internet?
I don't see names, address, or CC numbers. Just what they chose to write on the receipt which isn't protected information.

She should be fired for posting the couples personal information on the internet. I see an unidentaifiable scribble of a signature and that's it. You may know the person who signed the ticket but the rest of us don't.

I hope its not a trend, because to me its a trend for hypocrites. You actively seek out a server you know to be gay, just so you can feel self-righteous in stiffing them out of a tip. If you really hated that lifestyle so much that you really felt their service to you was valueless, you'd do your research and get served by a heterosexual server. Or ask to be switched to another server.
I think in this case, its an excuse to stiff someone out of $15 or more in tips. I don't think they really believe they are going to change anyone's mind. The comment about I thought your name would be Dan, to me means they shopped her as a server before they chose this restaurant and her. IMO they came intentionally to stiff her out of a tip which to me is very un-Christianlike behavior.

If folks like this party of four have issues with gay servers, be up front with the restaurant host or hostess. Tell them you don't want a gay server.
Be an asshat up front with your bigotry and not an asshat bigotted cockroach who scuttles out the back door after accepting the services of the waitperson and screwing the server out of a tip.

Just a way to be a cheapskate and an asshole at the same time.
The best way to handle these people is to say nothing and wait until they come back and give them the kitchen special.

I wouldn't say they're bunk, but I do question her decision to set up a Paypal account and accept donations. With the recent publicity about similar cases it makes this one seem like a money grab.

If I were in this position I might complain to high heaven amongst my FB friends but I wouldn't set up an account for donations. Just not good ethics.

what if the waitress had said that to the family, rather than vice versa?
"“I’m sorry but I cannot serve you because I do not agree with your lifestyle and the way you live your life," the note read.

I had read that she set up the Paypal account after people on FB urged her too; that detail could have been misreported in what I read.

Yeah, I have yet to hear from the Mystery Diners and hear their version. So, let's hear what THEY say.

She should be fired for posting the couples personal information on the internet. ROFL! What personal information? You mean the personal information that was on the receipt (along with the note) that was left on top of a table in a public restaurant? That personal information?

I had read that she set up the Paypal account after people on FB urged her too; that detail could have been misreported in what I read. It wouldn't make any difference to me who set up the account. The money is going to a worthy cause - the Wounded Warrior Project. Can't get much better than that. I'm sorry this poor woman had to be treated in that manner by classless fools, but I sure do admire her for what she's doing with her "tips". Great job!

Shooby, technically they probably aren't homophobes but people who believe gay is a choice and think being mean to gay people is OK. Where do they live? Pretty much everywhere like the gay community does.
I don't know what side of the story you want the tip stiffers to present. In your mind are there acceptable reasons to not pay tips even if you have OK to good service?

Shooby said: "Yeah, I have yet to hear from the Mystery Diners and hear their version. So, let's hear what THEY say." I believe we have already heard what the "Mystery Diners" had to say: "I’m sorry but I cannot tip because I do not agree with your lifestyle and the way you live your life," Unlike KKK members who wear hoods and sheets to make their racist point, the Mystery Diner cockroaches will hide from public scrutiny. They don't like the light.

One other fact in this story. The waitress did not lose money - the restaurant paid her tip.
As for the PayPal account, what does it matter who set it up? It's going to a good cause. And kudos to the restaurant for sending matching funds to the local LGBT organization.
As the classless diners, since they are "Christians", I'm sure that they will eventually face their omnipotent god who will judge them on how they lived their life.

I'd love to hear how they determined she was gay? Apparently a certain haircut or boyish looks is enough proof to basically steal the services of another person on a 100 buck ticket. They would be wise to never go back there.

She possibly didn't "look the part" of a heterosexual to them - maybe like you said, the haircut, or way she walked/body language.
But a lot of servers in restaurants have to wear a uniform or follow a dress-code of some sort - if that is white shirt/black pants, and black (comfortable) shoes and sometimes even a tie, this homo-phobe couple might have seen that as her expressing her 'sexuality' instead of part of what's expected of her as far as dressing for the job.
Not that many decades ago, the same thing was said for females, simply because they dared to wear trousers.
The people who stiffed her on the tip (and even worse yet) wrote the note - clearly were being prejudicial.
If someone stiffs on a tip, they're being cheap - if they scrawl out a hateful/hurtul message, they show what morals they themselves are lacking.

Where did you get $6? Please tell me you are not implying $6 is a proper tip on that ticket. If they did a good job it's worth $19.

Do you really believe that what these people did when they wrote that message on the receipt was ok?
The diners don't know squat about the server or her personal life - they were cheap by not tipping, but even more reprehensible by writing the note on the receipt, considering they were going on whatever made them "think" she might be gay. Even then it was the wrong thing to do. They could have just walked out after paying the tab (without tip, if that was their choice) instead of leaving the nasty message.
In the latter case it's unacceptable on their part -and uncalled for.
What would you do if your teen-aged son or daughter came to you one day and tell you they need to talk. They were nervous, and said they didn't know how to approach you, but they want you to know that they're gay. Would you still love them unconditionally as your child and accept them as the loving child you've always known and loved, or would you try to "change them back" or convince them they're "confused"? Or worse yet, turn your back on them?
