I just purchased a great fitting, in good shape, leather coat at Goodwill for a whopping $7.99. Unfortunately, the original black color has faded (as happens with these coats). For the low price, I figured it was worth taking a chance on trying to revive the color of the coat myself... so I've got a bottle of Black Fiebing Leather dye ordered and set for delivery this weekend (I looked online to see if any stores - walmart/ace/auto parts stores carried it but they didn't).
So, my question - has anyone here re-dyed leather? Any tips or hints? I did google and saw lots of info but it was in the realm of "worked great!" or "was easy!". so not particularly helpful.
If you have dyed leather - have you ever changed the color? I'd really really really love to change the color to a "Black Cherry " kinda color - but to do that I think I'd have to custom mix some dyes. Are leather dyes like RIT fabric dyes (and easter egg) dyes where you can 'create custome colors' by mixing dyes?
Not sure if this endeavor of dying the leather jacket counts as a Craft Project or SCIENCE!

Since you got it for $8 at Goodwill it's not like you'd be out a ton if you decided to try and dye it. Be warned that dying clothes makes a HUGE mess and the dye freaking stinks. I do my jackets outside in a gallon bucket.
Try a sample piece of fabric before dumping the coat into the bucket. Black can end up kinda purplish when the dye dries so you might find you want to add another color to balance it out and get it back it it's original color
Since you can't bleach out the original color without damaging the leather whatever you choose to use will end up way darker than you intended since it'll blend with the original dye. So if you want a "Black Cherry" kinda look I'd try 2 packets of a scarlet dye and let the coat soak for a few hours. If it works I think you'd get pretty close.
