So should we call them "that team from Washington?"

"It’s an insult, a slur, no matter how benign the present-day intent," Costas said. "It is fair to say that for a long time now, and certainly in 2013, no offense has been intended. But, if you take a step back, isn’t it clear to see how offense might legitimately be taken?" - quote from Costas
Seems like a pretty uncontroversial thing to say.

He has a point, but it is up to the owner to do a name change if he wants to.
Paula Deen did not get fired for what she said. Like many other people in the public eye who do and say stupid things the big damage comes from not apoligizing or making nice in a public and timely fashion. When your attempt at an apology becomes teary-eyed over the belief people are just targeting you for takedown, it really doesn't play well with the people you may have offended.
Still, I suppose she's in a better position than Charlie Sheen and Mel Gibson when they were in their total denial of their own stupidity phase.

FWIW, if you really want to compare like to like, the owner of the Redskins has to file a suit on these slurs and he would be fired at least 5 years after the most current slur had been uttered in public. Fired immediately.

There's redskin potatoes - maybe if they used a potato as their team logo, it would make them more PC.
(I seem to remember someone raised a stink about the team names about a year or two ago, too).
And it's the non native-Americans who are raising the biggest stink & trying to make a big deal out of it.
Who are they going to go after next - Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves, etc etc.?

I think it is much MORE offensive to have the name "Washington" in your team name. Who in their right mind would want to be associated with Washington, DC?

Hey, let's scrub the names across the board. Many local teams are called "Raiders" with an Indian logo. Wipe it out across the board and remove all references. Fine with me.

Costas is a mediocre sports announcer at best. He is NOT a great political analyst. He should be fired. We should also boycott the Oneida Indians and their ventures. I dislike Dan Snyder, but support him 100% on this issue.

Atlanta has come under fire before for using the "tomahawk chop" during games. I think it was first brought up in the 80's.

My big thing with the Washington Redskins is that, for decades, colleges have been made to change their mascots to something more PC but that isn't the case in the NFL (Redskins) or MLB (Braves, Indians). My college mascot was the Indians, but that got changed to the Eagles in the early 1990s. DH's college mascot was also the Indians, which was changed to the Crimson Hawks several years ago. Here it is "In May 2006, the NCAA ruled that the university would be prohibited from hosting postseason championship games and using the Indian nickname in postseason events, a year after the university was placed on a list of 18 schools whose mascots were non-compliant with NCAA policies."

Ok now I want to join the protest against the name just to see a NFL team with a potato on their helmet and a potato mascot running around the field. I do remember hearing this a few years ago too. One news report I heard on this latest go round touted that Atlanta Braves no longer does the chop and they and I think the Cleveland Indians altered their logo a few years ago. FSU still does their version of the chop and still has an "Indian" ride out on a horse to the center of the field and throw some flaming staff or something on the 50 yard line to signal the start of the game (or something like that, haven't seen a FSU game in years). Though I think the last time there was a kerfuffle about FSU the Seminole Indians came out saying they didn't have a problem. Hell, my high school in Florida was the Braves and on big games we'd have an "Indian" ride around the field on a horse just before the football players came running out.

The Red Mesa Redskins. High School in Arizona. 90% Navajo Native American. Nickname..... REDSKINS I guess this is ok, since they are allowed to refer to themselves as something they find so offensive. The feigned outrage of the left about such topics is humorous at best, pathetic at worst.

I think it is safe to say that any reference to pigment colour is now offensive.

lots of teams are starting to hear flack
chicago blackhawks
florida state seminoles
washington redskins
if they can get washington to change, it is all over for the rest
the value of the redskins exceeds 1 billion
that is a lot of marketing money to "lose"
dan snyder the owner is feeling the heat....but so far has said he intends to keep the name
and he is adamant about it right now.....
