We have a great opportunity to travel to Italy next September. We have friends who are now stationed there for 3 years and we would love to get to see them while they are there.
As of right now, our plans are: Leave August 28, land in Dublin the 29th. See UCF (our alma matter) play Penn State (my sister's alma matter) in Dublin on the 30th. This has become a big rival game in our family. Leave Dublin the 31st and go to Venice. Stay in Venice a few days with our friends. Travel to Termoli (?? East coast, my DH has family there) for a few days. End up in Rome and fly home from there.
Right now the flights for JFK-Dublin, Dublin-Venice, Rome-JFK are $1250 pp. I'm thinking that seems like a good price but I've never booked a trip like this so I have no idea.
While in Venice and Termoli we will have places to stay, otherwise I was thinking about staying in hostels? Has anyone had experience doing this?
And any other experiences traveling through Italy would be appreciated! DH has been before, but as part of a large group, and I have not. I'm a little nervous about traveling through a foreign country just the two of us because we don't know the language. He is less concerned. My sister and her DBF want to also go to the game and then go to Germany from there.
Absolutely nothing is set yet and we are still unsure that we will actually go -- this is all just me trying to analyze costs and plan it out so that we can make a better decision. We are hoping to spend 10 days or so in Italy.
As a side note -- we did a 10 day trip to Ireland 2 years ago, which is why we aren't staying in Ireland longer.

Imanangel is living in Italy with her husband. You might want to PM her. She's probably got some good suggestions for you.

Look into airbnb.com to rent a room in an apartment. The language won't really be too much trouble.

I don't know where Termoli is, so I can't offer suggestions to that. I will say that in addition to Venice being a favorite of mine, I loved Lake Como equally (to my surprise!). I found it more relaxing than Venice, personally.
Rome is necessary, but I seriously dislike the city itself. It's noisy, hot, and dirty. But you could spend a long time there seeing all sites, museums, and ruins! I love those!
I just looked up Termoli, and it looks like it's toward the south. I would recommend Pompeii and Herculaneum, along with some of Naples, if it's doable.

I second the airbnb.com for accommodations. Travelled to London, Paris & Barcelona with DDs last June and used them. Great prices and it's wonderful to have kitchen facilities. Prices range from really, really inexpensive all the way up. Since DDs didn't have much $$, we did the really inexpensive in London & Barcelona. Since I paid for Paris, the place was much nicer. But we really were only there to sleep and eat breakfast. Literally were out for the entire day and most evenings. Those two have energy! Re the airfare: for the time of year you are travelling, $1250 sounds about right.

Thanks for all of the advice. I will definitely check out airbnb -- I've heard of it but never knew anyone who had used it!
Plans are up in the air for awhile, DH isn't sure that he can get the time off of work. That is the busiest time of year for them. We talked about going to Italy first and making the game the last stop of our trip, but DH is the best man in a wedding the 23rd of August so that went right out the window!

MonicaLee5186 Not sure if you are still looking at possibly going to Italy or not.
I highly recommend the airbnb that has already been recommended to you. We use them all the time and have had great success.
Do not worry about the language. Most of the tourist spots like Venice, Rome, Florence, etc speak English. Rome is a must see, but the above poster is right when they say it is nosy and dirty. There are also a lot of pushy street vendors. Sounds horrible, I know, but I still think it is a must see. The good outweighs the bad IMHO.
If you do decide to still go, feel free to PM me anytime. I am always happy to talk about Italy.
