You don't know brag-plaints until you have a "Mom's night out" dinner with the mom's of a group of gifted kids. OMG. "L is so busy every summer. Between the special invitation only camp he does every year at Duke and his grandma flying him to Europe for two weeks I think we are only going to have time for one family vacation this summer." "We are so busy. There are so many schools that want "Precious" to attend that we have to wade through college letters every night" "My son lettered in Math League last year and went to state so I had to buy him a letterman's jacket for that letter. Now he is getting another Letter this year. What do I do with it? Buy him a second jacket?" They must be people who have kids at my DD's school. At the last football game I sat next to a woman who was complaining that her DD was accepted to Princeton, Notre Dame and Harvard, plus a few others that I must have blacked out for. The stress of figuring out which college to choose was too much! I think the correct response is "I'm so sorry to hear that your DD won't be attending any of those wonderful schools. Certainly if the stress of choosing between a few highly rated schools is too difficult for her, the stress and level of competitiveness involved in actually attending one of those school would be overwhelming for your DD."

I love people's vacation photos. And pet photos. My facebook feed is usually pretty boring.
ETA: I do have one facebook "friend" who is a seriously obnoxious, nonstop duckface selfie-posting bragger. I have kept her for entertainment value, but I think the time is coming to delete her.

"Ugh, I hate it, I look JUST like Sandra Bullock, and I don't think she is pretty!" Umm, you don't, no one has ever told you this, leave Sandra alone.
"My daughter hasn't even been born, and *baby daddy* already got her 2 ipods, an iphone, and an ipad!"
"When *baby daddy* and I move in together we are going to have too much stuff. What am I going to do with 2 Dyson's?"

A woman posted a picture of her teenage daughter with the caption:
"isn't she just so beautiful?"
It's just a brag, not a bragplaint, but I still think it was obnoxious. BTW, nobody agreed. And I wanted to say, um, no, she's got your squinty eyes and your husbands big nose, but I decided to be nice.

WOOT WOOT!!!! I lettered in AD in 1994 I fangirl out like a dork every time I meet a fellow AD alum. (I had totally spaced on Lettering until you mentioned it). They basically stopped doing it in MN. The last year the coach did it was I think like 3 years ago- 4 teams competed. It was pretty dismal. He had a horrible time convincing 9 kids to do it in the first place. They transitioned to Knowledge Bowl and that's going like gangbusters. They get around 40 or so kids that sign up every year from just DS' high school. The one across town has about 20-30 kids sign up. I've judged at the competitions before and even at the small "regional" level there are 30 or so teams competing. But to be fair- DS high school usually has enough kids to field 8 teams. So nice to meet another AD'er. Competition was pretty fierce in my area; especially between the two high schools in my town (we kicked their asses on a regular basis). It became such a big deal the school district got each of us laptops and our coaches would take out ads in the paper to sing our praises.

Our school went to Nationals like 15 out of 16 years. Our coach was super serious about it. He'd go through the school records and hand pick people to test to get on the team. He'd test like 75 to 100 people for the 9 slots. Then we started studying/practicing right away. We'd have practice 3-4 hours a day every day from the end of September to competition time (April?) You had to commit to doing AD and only AD for the school year. We called it 47lbs of knowledge because that's how much our study materials weighed The paper always ran a big multi page spread on the team and we got our own Pep Fest thing when we got back from Nationals.
