You don't know brag-plaints until you have a "Mom's night out" dinner with the mom's of a group of gifted kids. OMG. "L is so busy every summer. Between the special invitation only camp he does every year at Duke and his grandma flying him to Europe for two weeks I think we are only going to have time for one family vacation this summer." "We are so busy. There are so many schools that want "Precious" to attend that we have to wade through college letters every night" "My son lettered in Math League last year and went to state so I had to buy him a letterman's jacket for that letter. Now he is getting another Letter this year. What do I do with it? Buy him a second jacket?" They must be people who have kids at my DD's school. At the last football game I sat next to a woman who was complaining that her DD was accepted to Princeton, Notre Dame and Harvard, plus a few others that I must have blacked out for. The stress of figuring out which college to choose was too much!

A brag-plaint I heard this week, from a woman who has not worked for 15 years and has one child:
"We will be so busy the next 10 weeks! Traveling every weekend for our kid's football games [kid goes to an Ivy League college], then we'll be going on our annual ski trip at Christmas. I'll be so exhausted, I'll need at least a month of downtime after that!"
I did not rip her face off and throw it in the nearest trash bin. I did think about it, though.

Perhaps she is unaware that you can sew more than one letter on a jacket?
And lettering for Math League? Seriously?

My kids are so smart that nobody wants to be friends with them. They intimidate the other kids.

My kid and all of his friends are total nerds- combined their activities are: math league, Youth in Government, Robotics league, Science Club, History Club, Knowledge Bowl and one kid does tennis.

Way back when I was in HS, you only got letters for Sports, not Leagues or Clubs (although they had a Club for people who Lettered... ). How times have changed!

Nerd alert: I graduated HS in 2000. Lettered in Academic Decathlon and other academic competitions.

WOOT WOOT!!!! I lettered in AD in 1994 I fangirl out like a dork every time I meet a fellow AD alum. (I had totally spaced on Lettering until you mentioned it). They basically stopped doing it in MN. The last year the coach did it was I think like 3 years ago- 4 teams competed. It was pretty dismal. He had a horrible time convincing 9 kids to do it in the first place. They transitioned to Knowledge Bowl and that's going like gangbusters. They get around 40 or so kids that sign up every year from just DS' high school. The one across town has about 20-30 kids sign up. I've judged at the competitions before and even at the small "regional" level there are 30 or so teams competing. But to be fair- DS high school usually has enough kids to field 8 teams.

I graduated 1994. I lettered in Academic Olympics, Speech and Debate, and Academics. I also had pins for each of those, too (meaning I met the qualifications for "lettering" at least twice). I did not have a letterman's jacket. My mom asked if I wanted one, but ours were ugly- sky blue and sunshine yellow. I kept saying I wanted a letterman's jacket from my brother's school, where the colors were also blue and yellow, but came in navy and goldenrod.

Well, I'm sure that's what he told her! Did she also complain that she kept having to put out or the blue balls would kill him? But listen, if we need someone to take a box of Magnums and independently verify this story, I might "have a friend" who is willing.

I just saw one of these tonight and thought of this thread "Oh, the downfalls of having joint accounts. I just saw a purchase for flowers that I didn't make, and contacted DH to make sure he knew about it. Looks like he bought me flowers, again, for no apparent reason." Ok, maybe I am jealous a bit.

LOL! You all could be right. I would never suspect that from him, but then again, I guess most of the time that's what people say.

My mother is the WORST at this. I seriously put the phone down and walk away so I don't throw it half the time. She complains how TIRED and BUSY she is because she did a load of laundry, had a doctor's appointment, and needs to go pick her cherry tomatoes. This is a woman who owns her own townhouse and is retired from being a SAHM for 20 years. She has 1 dog no spouse and no job and she's BUSY ? She's also too busy to come see her grandaughter. She's seen her *2* days since Xmas. and DD is almost 2. We both work FT, have a toddler, and 3 dogs, and apparently I have all the time in the world. Yes I'm angry and need therapy.

Just saw JERSEY BOYS. Awesome show, btw. Ran into someone I know and try to avoid but was stuck. Of course SHE'S seen it 3X and in Chicago, New York, and some other fancy city. In her annoying loud voice that I can replicate to DFs spines unhappiness! That's how I handle her. I imitate her voice and her one upsmanship to DF and he just cringes which makes me laugh and stop being so tired of her.
