Canners, please educate me. Where is the best place to buy canning jars and supplies. I want a selection of sizes from small jars to the large wide mouth + I want to be able to get the plastic lids that fit them for non canning uses. I have not canned in years and I can't figure out where to get them. The grocery store will carry one, maybe two sizes & I find the same at the department/grocery store. So clearly I am not looking at the right kind of stores! Do feed stores carry a lot of variety? Our local feed store closed but I think there is one a couple of towns over (where suburbia has not taken over entirely). Help. Just want to avoid having to buy them on line since shipping would be high for heavy glass jars.

Walmart.
Or, if you're patient - garage sales.

Costco, Lowes, or Home Depot - just to name a few places.

Walmart has a ton. My local grocery store also carries them. Or maybe ask around to see if anyone has any they want to get rid of.

It's too late to buy canning supplies in my very urban area - that shelf space has been cleared and holiday crap is now on display. But, pretty much when the "Back to School" stuff started to appear back in early July --- WalMart, Miejer, Ace hardware, Home Depot, and even the local Jewel had some canning supplies. WalMart had the biggest selection - from 4oz jars to giant 1/2 gallon jars... they also Martha Stewart "jars and accessories" as well as Ball "jars and accessories". Miejer's and the others seem to mostly have the 8oz and 16 oz jars (and few if any extra lids or tools - like a funnel or jar tongs) If you think canning stuff is 'out of season' in your area - I'd suggest using the WalMart online site - see if you can have what you want delivered from other stores to the one near you I canned 'pickles', corn relish, tomato jam, and spiced pear jam for the first time ever! And it was easy and fun and I haven't died from eating any of it

Stop in your local thrift stores. They sell jars all the time and they will cost half of new ones. As far as lids and rings, they can be bought at any grocery store. Check out some yard sales on a Saturday morning, I bet you will find some more. Mention your need to an elderly neighbor who may want to downsize, you might get some jars for free.

Walmart. Or, if you're patient - garage sales. Definitely garage sales. Make certain to run your finger over the rim and make sure that there aren't any nicks or chips. If there are, the jar isn't good for canning. Also, keep at eye out at WalMart for clearance on lids and jars. I've been able to get a lot of it for about 50% off after the canning season has ended.
