The only thing I might have done different than him is kept accelerating on the highway hoping they wouldn't want to go as fast as I did. There are 200 guys on motorcycles. There is no way that at least some of them won't choose to keep up with you. Most will have a higher top speed, better acceleration, and better manuevering. You aren't going to outrun all of them no matter how fast you go or how well you know the roads. If it came to the chase part, I think I would be on the phone with the police and stay on the highway until the police direct me to do otherwise. I think you would be safest not placing yourself in a situation where you might have to stop. And I would pray the police would direct me somewhere that they can meet me.

I already acknowledged that the bikes have a faster top speed. Unless you stay ahead of them you run the risk of being placed in a situation you have to stop. All they have to do is swarm around you at speed and you are as trapped as he was when he stopped. The potential damage is just going to be bigger all around.
While some will choose to keep up with you, if you go really fast, they are more at risk ending up dead than you are if they hit road debris or make a small mistake. You are more likely to find help off the highway instead of on unless you know there is a popular speed trap up ahead nearby. I think your idea of getting the cops to meet you is a good one. I don't think I would have thought of that in the heat of the moment, but I probably would have asked for directions to a police station.
On a different highway or road he could have exploited the fact a Range Rover can negotiate terrain a rice burner can't. But this was NYC, so the best choice is to head towards the police or lots of people IMO.

The plot thickens. At least one off duty NYPD officer admits to being present at the beating and doing nothing. I have a feeling more might be coming forward. nypost.com/2013/10/04/undercover-cop-stood-by-as-bikers-beat-dad/off-duty, undercover NYPD cop was among the pack of bikers who chased a family up the West Side Highway — and he stood by as the dad was hauled from his car and beaten, sources told The Post. The unidentified officer waited three days to come forward Wednesday night. He has been placed on modified duty, and turned in his gun an badge on Friday, the sources said. He rides with the New Rochelle-based Front Line Soldiers, a club that also counts several other cops among its members, a source said. Internal Affairs is investigating whether those cops, too, were among the bikers — and whether they also witnessed the assault that left Internet exec Alexian Lien bleeding on the pavement as his wife and toddler cowered in their black Range Rover. “It is does not appear that he got involved at the scene,” one law enforcement source said of the undercover, who has hired a lawyer. Also from the article: The Rover’s smashed windows are a record of the vehemence with which the berserk bikers tried to get at Lien, whose window was busted clean out. Wife Rosalyn’s driver side window was fully spider-webbed, and the rear window above the tailgate was also broken out completely.

I was kind of confused about the undercover cop. Was he there to infiltrate what those gangs are up to? If so, what a shame he got outed. If not, I agree that they should be put on leave or fired - depending on their involvement.
Around here the cops are in the news for crimes almost as much as the thugs are. All the way to the top in some areas!

People are upset about the New York undercover police not doing anything to stop the beating by the motorcyclist. Wonder how they would feel about the Mesa AZ police when they were watching serial killers Dale Hausner and Sam Dieteman. "We had the suspects under Constance surveillance" Which mean the police watched them shoot their last victim. Later they withdrew that statement.
