Government. I kid you not. I took it completely apart, inspected it, cleaned it, and put it all back together and it still wouldn't rinse a dish clean. I ran a clean load of glasses, and they came out dirty. At that point, I knew for certain the government was screwing with me- and I wasn't wrong. Here you are from the fringe right wing, Glenn Beck-worshipping, Alex Jones-like NPR: Dishes Still Dirty? Blame Phosphate-Free Detergentwww.npr.org/2010/12/15/132072122/it-s-not-your-fault-your-dishes-are-still-dirtyIf NPR is right wing enough for you, there's the right wing militia folks at the NY Times: Cleaner for the Environment, Not for the Disheswww.nytimes.com/2010/09/19/science/earth/19clean.html?_r=1I would submit to you that it's highly likely that there's no real environmental benefit, or that it's negligible. We are going to have to deprogram and entire generation, or live in a communist hell hole eating off dirty plates.

I'd run. Phosphate free dishwasher detergent is old news.

or you could go back to doing the dishes the old fashioned way.... washing them by hand. I know I know, your time is probably too valuable for something so mundane, but there is an easier solution than needing to overthrow the govt because your dishwasher sucks.

My dishwasher works just fine. It's the detergent that sucks. I fail to see where mandating shitty dishwasher detergent falls under the "to secure these rights" role of government.

oh noez.. your plates aren't spotless! It's the END OF THE WORLD!!!
Those of us who keep track of the world around us have known this for months. Where were you? Granted, I voluntarily switched to phosphate free detergent a year before it was mandated, so whatever.
Add some vinegar to your wash to get rid of the leftover scum.

I'm also wondering where they get the authority to make us use mercury-laden CFL lightbulbs...

My dishwasher cleans my dishes and glasses until they are sparkling clean. I do use a good brand name detergent. I've found cheaper detergents don't clean as well.

I'd say 3 out of 4 loads my dishes are sparkly... then in the 4 load I run some vinegar through. I'm using an energy efficient dishwasher and a zero phosphate detergent too. Sometimes I have to rewash a glass, but.. eh.
It's that or killing fish off in my lakes and streams.

Interesting, I have worked on dishwasers home size and commercial and have never seen or heard of rinsing clean dishes and them comming out dirty. And many used phosphate free detergent especially commercial units. Your dish washer may be running fine but I seriously doubt phosphate free detergent is any issue for this. I lived and worked all over Fla for thirty years and my experience is that even in washing machines that may not clean but the issue was always sulpher or phosphate in the water which Fla. has plenty of that turns brownish when heated. This is especiall true if you house is on a well since the well water if not filtered will have a more acute problem . The other factor is that minerals in Fla. water even city water will build up in a water heater and if it starts to scale off will make cleaning of anything a tough chore. Many homes in Fla. use water softners but if they are not maintained will impact and not work properly. For a test once the washer has filled stop the action open the door and pour a cup of lemon juice in and start it again and see if this helps. If so you have a water issue not the detergent.

That's part of my problem We have super hard water in my town, but water softeners are as bad (if not worse) than phosphates in detergents!

I'm just switching to paper plates. Screw it. How's THAT for saving the environment- and I'll save money on dishwasher detergent, that also-phosphate-free Jet Dry stuff, electricity, and water. I'll probably come out ahead.

Just make sure you buy paper plates made of recycled materials and then compost them, Paul

I have been using liquid soap and it doesn't even rinse out of the soap cup all the way. It jams the sprayers, and everything finishes with the food still on the dishes, and white powder coating everything. It started at the exact time the phosphates came out. I'm just not putting up with it, and I'm not jumping through hoops to solve the problem-- I'm just going to quit using dishes for daily use. When we have company, we'll wash 'em in the sink.

Umm.. adding Vinegar occasionally isn't exactly jumping through hoops. It's also a frugal cleaning supply and handy in a bazillion other situations. Just keep a bottle under the sink and toss in a half cup now and then. Or wash by hand. Either way, uhh.. get over it.

Never really figured the reason for doing things is really what's important, so long as it get's done. People can arrive at the same place from two entirely different directions.

Paul - It may be the brand of detergent you are using. I have found the generic brands don't perform as well as name brands. The soap scum residue happens with the cheaper brands even in my new dishwasher. It is also possible it is the water. Water in my area has a high mineral content and using rinse aids does not eliminate water spots on some dishes and plastic items.
Also, are you sure your supply/discharge lines are clear? I had something similar happen and discovered that my discharge hose was partially obstructed. Not all the dirty water was emptying, but recycling back into the rinse cycles.

I can't afford to use my dishwasher, so I do it the old fashioned way. Damn-- I am so glad I am not falling in to this gov't brainwashing program dishwasher scheme!!! Almost flipped when my daughter came home last week with a very expensive pack of curly lightbulbs!! Had to inform her that we can still get the old school killer ones made in China now at the 99 cent store. Way to go, GE-- force all the po folks to buy China or live in the dark. Besides, we have babies and calling the hazmat team when one knocks over a lamp sounds stupid to me.

Uhhh.. I, for one, have never had to call hazmat and only have to buy a new lightbulb once every. Actually I haven't had to replace a cfl yet. it's kinda awesome actually. Oh and my electric bill went down significantly when I first made the switch.

Well, good for you. Make sure and call hazmat if you break one of those bulbs. They are toxic.

Come on up to Banada, where incandescent lightbulbs, "dangerous" printer cartridges, Dire Straits, cigarillos, pit bulls, and much much more are banned nationwide. This is you. You must be protected. We are the Canadian Government.

Seriously, Paul, I use Cascade Complete in my dishwasher and my dishes are always sparkling clean when I take them out. I do throw in a cup of vinegar about once a week to make sure the machine stays clean, but that's it. Try changing detergents to see if it makes a difference.
