What would you do if you retired in a bigger city? Because if you'd still just play on the internet and drink coffee, then I'd go for the cheaper option.
You should get some hobbies though. Playing on the internet and drinking coffee will kinda get old.

'Thinking of retiring to a mile or two from a town with nothing in it. I have searched the internet and can't find a senior center, any charity nothing at all but a tiny grocery store.'
I would think long and hard about this. We live in a town of 20K and we have two groceries, one service station, various and sundry small stores that open and close fairly regularly, and a decent medical campus of all sorts of Drs, two fire stations, active town hall/community center/library center.
The nearest hospital is 12 miles away in North Scottsdale. Central Phoenix is 30 miles away.
There is a large golf community about 10 miles north of here and there is NOTHING except a convenience store and expensive golf homes. The residents have to travel at least 10 miles in two directions for a gas station and groceries. Emergency medical aid has to travel the 10 miles to get to them.
The thing that would bother me most is the lack of emergency aid.

I was thinking in the city in retirement I would join a gym, invite people over to play cards or for dinner and join a senior center besides drinking coffee and playing on the internet.
I think I can find activities even if I have to create them.

I wouldn't.
My dad retired to a small town and is getting less than adequate healthcare. There is nothing I can do about this and it bothers me immensely. Closest place where he could get adequate care is over an hour away and even that I'm not sure about.

I've got it. You need to run a bait shop. Coffee & Bait. You'd be awesome at it!!!!!!! I know you are joking but where we used to live the most popular store in town was a combo bait and tackel/deli. I couldn't ever get past the bins of bloodworms and night crawlers to order my sub.

LOL! I was going to say "Try to meet and make some new friends" but if I didn't like the people I'd probably do what Zib said.

The aging process does accelerate after 60. The difference between 60 and 70 is nothing compared to the difference between 70 and 80. Thanks a lot.... (As I approach my 69th birthday, you've given me something to look forward to. NOT)

(As I approach my 69th birthday, you've given me something to look forward to. NOT) Hey Gardening Grandma - don't listen to the naysayers. My mother just turned 90 and she still lives independently, takes care of all her own daily needs including bathing, dressing, shopping and cooking, keeping house, paying bills etc. She also sings in her church choir, plays in a bridge group, teaches three knitting classes a week and volunteers at the homeless outreach center. Her only concessions to "old age" are that she does not drive at night or on the freeways (local, daytime errands only) and does not travel alone (one of us kids or a friend always go with her, or she travels in an escorted group with other seniors). It is very possible to have a healthy old age. Yes she has definitely slowed down but refuses to be stopped. She was out there Labor Day weekend picking tomatoes at the u-pick farm with us and some of us pooped out before she did! You can do it too, GG! (have a healthy old age)

Gardening Grandma - and anyone else who might be interested - if you're curious about living in a small town and what it may mean to longevity, do a Google search for Blue Zones, or the Blue Zone Project.
REALLY interesting stuff!

I think it would be a great business that crone could run part time and be really happy with. I don't know her specific location, but with her description of the river & remoteness, I think a bait shop would work well.

I'm not a "get away from it all" person. I would rather live in a studio apartment downtown then a sprawling multi-acre mansion in the middle of nowhere. We even vacation in large cities.
If you feel you need to drive 20 minutes for everything, consider how long you will be healthy enough to drive long distances. I know the 30 minute drive to our house is becoming too much for my in-laws. If they had to do that often to get groceries or socialize or whatever, I think it would be a miserable, tiring existence for them.

There is a lot to do if you are determined to find things to do. We have parks, rails to trails. We have some good local high school football teams and sports. We have rivers and creeks and a lot of people are into kayaking and camping or geocaching. Several of my coworkers are cross country runners. We have a local theater group . If you want to make you own fun, you can find fun. If not, then a small town might not be for you.

And, just because you live in a small town, doesn't mean you can't venture out at times to the local city. I don't have to live in the city to go and enjoy the city from time to time.

I live in a rural area between a town of 9000 and one of 6000. The first one (Port Townsend) has a wonderful library, two theaters, and something going on every weekend in the summers. Seattle is a 2 hr trip. Sometimes there is something in Seattle we really want to go to so we'll get a hotel room instead of trying to return home late at night.
I don't think I'd like to live in a town like Croned describes unless it was driving distance to a large city.
I liked Crone's notion of buying herself a condo in or near Seattle if she moved in with her boyfriend.

We retired to a small lakeside town.....I bought lake frontage in the late 70's, when it was somewhat affordable, with the idea of retiring here......We love it......No traffic problems...... We don't have big shopping centers, but we can always find what we need.....And if we need something from a large city, 50 miles north or south of us gets us to bigger cities..... Restaurants are not crowded, never have to have reservations.....Just a great place to live.....Everybody knows everybody here, and we don't have minorities to deal with. I'm speechless.....

For now you can. My grandparents are getting to the point where it's unsafe for them to drive. There is no public transporation in Treynor or from Treynor to CB. They're Homebodies so entertainment wise it isn't a huge deal but it's becoming a real issue health wise because my grandfather's doctors are all here. So either it's pay a fortune for taxis, have my half blind great uncle drive up from Millard (don't ask) or have my dad make an hour long round trip. If they were here I could pick them up on my way to work and drop them off at his appointment at the DOC and not even be late for work. I could even leave and come back before my lunch hour is over if need be. I can't be making the trip to Treynor on a regular basis. It was fine when they were healthy enough but now it's becoming a major problem. Unfortunately we don't think my grandma will agree to move unlesss something very bad happens with my grandfather that she can't excuse away.

I'm not sure I'd retire to a tiny town. From what I've seen with my relatives, the aging process accellerates as you get older, and changes can happen quickly, all at once. By the time you reach the point where you've come to the conclusion that you need to move closer to the city for the services, you're also at the point where moving is just too hard.

But whether it is practical for someone of retirement age who doesn't have family nearby or roots in the commmunity to relocate to a place with no public transportation, hosptials and specialists is another thing entirely. I think Crone's idea of haivng the condo in the city is a good idea. That way, if she or her ISO become ill, they can relocate without too much drama.

It depends on what you like to do. If you want to go to the Theater and Opera or be in crowds of people going to events all the time, then maybe it isn't for you. I personally am a homebody and i have plenty to do in my own neck of the woods. I don't "need" the entertainment of a city. I can entertain myself just fine and dandy here.

If you want to make you own fun, you can find fun. If not, then a small town might not be for you. I am not planning to be so very active but fishing in the river in the yard might get old. I really like the idea of owning a small shop so people come in to chat and shop. I used to want a bait shop on a lake with boat rentals and employees. Now thinking tiny shop maybe mobile selling a few lures, coffee, chips and candy. Then guys going to the river can stop to see what is biting, get coffee and a new lure and chips and coffee to take to the boat, I would also sell ice and soda, not beer. I could be open 1/2 hour before daylight until 11AM then gone fishing sign goes up or open at lunch with some packaged foods, no cooking or mess. I could even be closed a couple of days a week or when sick or too cold or business too slow. I would like to meet some nice people maybe invite them to play cards or fish at our house. I get stir crazy after 3 days at home with nobody new to talk to. A RV park is for sale but too much work to take on 38 spots and a house for about a million dollars. If it was 8 spots I might like owning that.

Well, i grew up in small town America. And, i lived in the city to go to college and spent some years working there. But, when i had the chance, i moved back close to my hometown and have a very similar lifestyle to how i grew up. I guess it depends on what is important to you. I don't want to go to a Pro game, i can go up the High School and watch Friday night football for $3 and cheer and have fun. There really isn't anything in a city that i want so i don't get the appeal. And, if i want to go to some event, then we do but maybe once or twice a year, that's plenty for me.
