I happen to love, love, love Friday the 13th. I usually seem to have good luck, positive happenings or activities, and happy feelings on every Friday the 13th. I like odd things and Friday the 13th, of course, is one of them.
Other people that I know seem to dread the date, and talk about black cats, bad luck and the whole break a mirror thing.
How do others here feel about Friday the 13th, if it matters at all to them ?

I'm 53 (almost 54) and I've never had any truck with Fri the 13th being bad luck. But DH had a routine hospital appt yesterday, and he had bad news. So now I'm thinking that from here on in, I probably WILL fear Friday the 13th. ETA: A couple of weeks ago DS3 (15) asked me if I was worried about it. I told him no. I explained that different countries have different folklore / legends, and that superstitions are linked to them. I know that is still true but DH has had a MAJOR setback and I can't help realizing that it was Friday the 13th.

Oh, no! Hope the news is for something that is temporary or may have a chance to improve.

I'm sorry the news for DH wasn't good, debthaven. I really hope it's something that can be rectified!

Thank you Milee, we really hope so. The doctor thinks the bone in his hand is infected (still? again?). DH has to go to their next full staff meeting on 2 Oct. That just seems ages away.
ETA: Thank you too, Mmhmm. I really appreciate the good thoughts!

I'm very sorry to read about your husband's hand, debthaven. Does he have osteomyelitis ( chronic bone infection ) ? Ask if they have cultured out the bacteria that is infecting the bone. They may need to change up his antibiotic routine, or possibly do some debridement. Good luck.

Aww, Debt. Sorry you and your DH got bad news. I hope he gets good news soon and a full recovery is near. I've always been lucky on Friday the 13th since day one. I was born on a Friday the 13th. I know. That explains a lot. My Grandma just turned 92 this past Friday the 13th. Yay Grandma!

Cool. That's a neat connection to Friday the 13th for both you and your grandma. I don't know where my attachement to it comes from, although we always had lots of fun with Halloween and Friday the 13th and black cats and such when I was growing up.

I don't know where my attachement to it comes from, although we always had lots of fun with Halloween and Friday the 13th and black cats and such when I was growing up. I love Halloween! We had a black cat when I was kid and it was my favorite cat. For the longest time I'd only want a black cat. My brother's felt the same way but we do love all colors. But many people are so superstitious they won't have a black cat no matter how beautiful or sweet. I never could get that. But I'm not superstitious. <<knocks on wood>> ETA: I just remembered something kind of funny. I met a girl (new neighbor years ago) that made a comment about her birthday being on Halloween. She got all funny and nervous acting after telling me that. She looked up at me and said "Aren't you going to say something?" I said "I was born on Friday the 13th. What could I possibly say to you?"

Dec. 25th, snow leopards bring such wonderful joys. Roll over Virgil.
I also love black cats.

I'm sorry, Debt, about your husband's (and your) bad news.
For me, Friday the 13th is considered a lucky day. My son, who was 12 days late at that point, was born on Friday the 13th.

My husband and I were married on Friday the 13th (on purpose). We specifically choose that day (in October to make it spookier) so he wouldn't forget it.

I wanted to thank you all for your kind thoughts and words.
Naz, the answer is, we don't know. We won't have any news until the next big "SOS Hands" staff meeting on 2 Oct, so in 2 weeks and 2 days (DH has been asked to go to the meeting.) But I suspect the possibilities Naz listed are all possible. They have a full meeting 2X a month, and next one is 2 Oct.
DH had a hospital superbug LAST Oct (so a year ago), and they said it was cleared up after 3 months of antibiotics. He hasn't had any antibiotics since Jan. If there is an infection, they saw it on the Xray, and it's in the bone. His hand shows no visible signs of infection (thank Gd), which is why we were so shocked at the results of last week's "routine" X ray. I suppose there is always the possibility that the doctor DH saw on Fri is wrong. But she wasn't sure what to do next, which is why she asked DH to come to the 2 Oct meeting.
I'll let you know what happens after 2 Oct but for now we are clueless. We just have to wait (not my strong point).
Had I even imagined this might happen I would NOT Have taken on a more-than-FT workload.
To bed with me, very early start tomorrow. I'm on here much less than before, but that's because of work, not because of DH's hand.

I don't care either way. It's just a date, like any other. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just being foolish and superstitious.

I don't really think of it much more than just another day on the calendar.
I don't know who chose Friday as the day to associate with 13 being bad luck - if it had originated as Wednesday the 13th being the so-called bad luck day, then everyone would be making a big deal about that day as being unlucky.
I haven't really had any bad happen from the number 13 - oh wait - I got married on the 13th. I take that back.

We note it, but don't think much about it. Our parent's place is isolated deep in the redwoods. Fog rolls in regularly, and there are underground streams with sinkholes deep enough to trap adults on the property. We had three black kittens that grew up with us, and very tall ladders were always propped and tied against the house (for perpetual construction) so we'd wander under them to get to the car and back indoors every day. Halloween I mainly associate with dressing up and candies. DF and I are getting married this Halloween if he gets back from KSA in time; I don't like getting fancy normally, so having an anniversary on a "dress differently" holiday means I'd actually put on a dress and polish up out of my fleece and jeans. I think if my sisters and I been more inclined to superstitions and ghosts, we'd have given ourselves heart attacks before we turned 18 Little sis went through a "keep off the ground" patch after watching Tremors, but mostly strange creaking and rustling is normal for us.

Here's a couple of links that'll give you a look at some of the background history. It might give you some insight as to how it's evolved to what we think Friday the 13th represents today.

Coincidentally, in case you were unaware, there are 13 witches in a coven.

I had a boss / manager that uses his vacation day(s) on Friday the 13th to stay home. I now recently take the time to watch a mini marathon of the movies. so I'll go with I like and my previous boss doesn't like

I've lived through so many Friday the 13th that I don't even give it a thought. Usually someone will say something about it being the 13th and I say OH and promptly forget - old age is a wonderful thing sometimes
