Update: I drove out to a dark hilltop facing south... and can report that it was visible in New London, CT., 300 miles north of the launch site. I saw primary stage rockets, which fizzled out and dropped off, and I saw the secondary thrusters fire up and push it across the sky. Fortunately, for once there were no obscuring cloud cover or low coastal fog, either. It was the first space launch I ever saw that I didn't see on the television.

Good for you, patience! That's really cool. We're too far away to have seen much, anyway, and the cloudiness would have rendered even that impossible. I'm really glad you got to see your first launch!

Closest I have ever come to something like that was the space shuttle gliding way overhead (in fact, out of sight) as it was flying toward Florida for a landing. Quite the sonic boom though. This was the view of the rocket launch from NYC.

... on mission to collect dust ... Damn, if I had known that they needed some dust, I would have invited them over to my place. They could have all the dust they want.
