Shooby - I've often said that we needed a crazy uncle, so our family wouldn't be so boring. My husband and I have tried to step up and do stuff like drink too much, and tell off-color jokes and stuff. We don't have the guts to be really controversial. Sends thyme some of my "more colorful" relatives.

I just got back from a long weekend at the beach with the in-laws. It was not bad until DH and FIL left for their golf league. MIL had one too many vodka and tonics and spent the majority of the time telling me how I can do everything better and then making comments about my hobbies (how many sunset pictures does someone need anyway?!??! A LOT! THAT'S HOW MANY!!!! ). And then just before the guys got back she said "I don't know why we don't spend more time together". Both sides of the family all live in the same county. It is nice that the Grands are snowbirds, so we always have the option of a FL trip in the winter time if we want to pony up for it!

You must have been stone sober to have the sense not to kill her!

I have been sprinkling some "according to your Mom's" into conversations since we got home. Then I end with "it was a loooooong Tuesday" to which he replies "I know". I figure I can milk this through Labor Day.

The key to dealing with family is to eliminate guilt, the most worthless of emotions. Once you accomplish this, you can treat them however you will, and the world will be your oyster.

My inlaws bought a vacation home right before DH and I got married. We worked such crazy schedules that we only got to go to this particular spot once a year. Usually for a long weekend. However, we stayed in a different resort since FIL/MIL wouldn't let us stay at their place. BIL/SIL could stay, BIL's friends could stay, uncle and aunt's family could stay-all for free. But us? No. And that was fine. When something got broken though, we are the ones who had to listen about how much it costs to fix it. When the family would get together and talk about the good times they had at the vacation home, we just sat there. Embarrassed. Yes, we shouldn't have been, but human nature took over, and we were. We listened to the jokes and things they did, stories they told. DH said years ago, 'When we have children and they get married and have kids, I want to come here for the week together. We will pay for the house, but I want to make memories with my grandkids.'
Guess what we did last year? Many years after DH first made the statement, we went back to the area, paid for the rental and made memories that we will always have. And DH said later, 'I wish my parents would have wanted to spend time with my kids'.
