I came to this board a few weeks ago feeling desperate because my condo suffered severe water damage due to a frozen pipe. Tonight I received the very good news that the condo association is now scheduling repairs. Sunday morning at 11 am they are sending an employee from the company that administers the condos to take pictures and determine the necessary repairs for my home. I am relieved. It has been a nightmare. Now it's getting better. Besides that, I am also paying off my car loan in March. That is a biggie for me. I will be able to do that because I got a big tax refund. I know, tax refunds are not a good thing. But for me, it's better to receive a big check all at once instead of getting extra money every paycheck. It's my method. I know I am giving the IRS an interest-free loan, but it works for me, for now. The only black cloud on my horizon right now is that money is tight. I am talking about monthly income. Last year my income was better because I was working overtime every Saturday. I guess I'll have to ask the manager to put me on the Saturday schedule again. I wanted to share the good news with all of you. You guys were very supportive when I went through the water leaks inside my home. Another thing I've noticed is that the general attitude of the posters has changed since we moved from MSN. I am under the impression that we don't have the very agressive answers and the "it's all your own fault" responses we used to get. In fact, I refrained from posting in MSN many times because the attitude was kind of harsh for my taste.

I don't know where my post went so I will try again. Ava glad to hear that the condo assoc. will be doing the repairs. If you have time stop by Smart Spending and maybe you can find a hint or two to help stretch the budget.

That's great news! Home repairs stink anyway, & you really went thru a lot! Hope your stuff wasn't damaged.

Do you realize you have just contradicted yourself. You are willfully creating your tight monthly money situation.

Fortunately, I am covered and I don't have to pay for any of the damage. I don't know if the insurance would cover damage to my furniture and personal property. But I don't care because the major damage is in the empty bedroom. There's also damage in the downstairs living room, but it's just the walls and floor, and the carpet.
I know you said you drifted away. But a quick primer on condo insurance.
The association has a policy on the structure. You have the option to go purchase a policy on your own for your belongings. Similar to rental insurance.
Your state and those policies, will determine exactly where one policy ends and the other begins. In my condo days, in my state, I was responsible (via my personal policy) for everything "paint inward." YMMV

If you don't have condo insurance, you need it. It is not expensive, just a little more than renters insurance. It would cover your appliances, carpet, furniture, clothing and all household contents. If there was a fire or other disaster, it would be very expensive to replace everything you own.
Have you ever considered setting up a savings account that makes automatic withdrawals with each paycheck?
You could earn interest on the money instead of loaning it to the IRS.
You could also have a little more in your monthly budget and not have it so tight.
