Any legitimate proof the sales associate made up her version of the story? Bingo. The Oprah made the accusation, The Oprah can back it up. No? Well I guess it's not a story then. Just she said/she said. Is there any back up on the story in the OP?

I'll go with the lady who would have made a commission from the sale. But let's say the story happened exactly how Oprah said it did - what was racist about it? I am not black so you will have to ask a black person on the street why it might be racist. I believe there was a female poster on the Racism in the U.S. thread who is either black or married to a black man and they have mixed race children. I believe she provided a few examples how blacks are treated 'differently' in department stores. I've been treated "differently" in department store before. Since I'm white, I just figured the sales associate was a b*tch, had an off day, wasn't trained well, was dealing with some personal $hit that spilled over into work, whatever. There are numerous possible explanations that don't include skin color, so I don't get why that racism seems to be the default reason when it happens to someone who is black. Kinda like when Obama made the comment about locking car doors or pulling your purse tighter in an elevator. I've done that before, but race isn't the issue, the vibe I get is, and frankly, the person's gender is as well. And I'm not going to stop doing that just because the person involved happens to have a different skin tone than me and may find it racist. I find it rather arrogant that people think they know my reasoning, so I'm willing to give the sales associate in Oprah's story the benefit of the doubt.

You aren't thinking like a commission based salesperson. If the person buys it and returns it the commission you earned all disappears and it might take weeks to go positive again and get more than base salary. Sales people are leery of big spenders that are likely big returners. (Eaxmple: one week you earn $500 commission on a big sale. Two weeks later, that entire purchase is returned. -$500 commission is put against your earnings and you won't get commission again until you earn over $500 more.)
Two, if its the typical setup where the sales person is behind the counter, you have the additional hurdle of getting around the counter versus the customer's straight shot to the door.

I know Oprah feels it was racism, but many of us would guess it was the salesperson thinks you can't afford it. It appears the salesperson was correct though. Oprah didn't know the cost of the bag and wouldn't have purchased it. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2392778/Oprah-Winfrey-insists-WAS-victim-racism-Swiss-store-nearly-called-Jennifer-Aniston-tell-her.htmlOprah had claimed in the original Entertainment Tonight that the Italian-born sales assistant refused to show her the crocodile leather bag, the suggestion being, she implied, that as a black woman she could not afford it. The incident happened at the Trois Pommes Boutique in Storchengasse, a street behind the ritzy Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich, one of the world's wealthiest and most expensive cities. She went on: 'I was the only person in the store. I had dressed myself up extra special because I know that things can get very snobby in these kinds of stores. 'The employees first check out what clothes you're wearing. Therefore I chose a Donna Karan outfit - and even washed my hair even. So nobody could mistake me for a homeless person who got lost in the store. 'The woman did not want to get down the bag which I wanted to look at. The effort was too much for her. She said to me, that the bag was simply too expensive. And I said: "I want to see it anyway." Instead she tossed me cheaper bags. 'I said: "Okay, thank you very much! But I really want to see the others." She still kept showing me the cheaper ones. 'To be honest, if I had known upfront what this damned bag cost, do you know what? The woman was right: I would not have bought the thing - far too expensive! Too expensive! $38,000! I would have fainted when I saw the price tag.' She continued: 'The saleslady said it was the Jennifer Aniston bag that was created by Tom Ford for Jennifer. The idea went through my head that I should call Jennifer or Tom - I know them both very well. Instead I said to the saleslady: "Okay, I understand. The bag is just for Jennifer, and only she is allowed to buy it, right? 'The woman said "no, no" and tried to explain something. But I was no longer listening. I just said: "Thank you very much, you're probably right that I can't afford it." 'I went. I didn't want to make a scene. Really not. That's why it annoys me now too, that it has become this major international story. And that the names of Tom Ford and Jennifer Aniston were pulled in too. The whole thing is really quite annoying.'

WHILE YOU ALL ARE TRYING TO FIND FACTUAL EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT YOUR ARGUMENTS AND CAN'T FIND ANY, DON'T YOU REALIZE IF YOU WRITE IT IN ALL CAPS THAT IT HAS TO BE TRUE?
