I realized today that a big, beautiful rhododendron was on its side. I picked it up gently but it snapped at the base. I'm guessing it was broken in a storm while we were away. It has a tiny bit of its root system, but not much.
I'm going to try to replant it anyway, but does anybody know if it will take?

My guess is no, but give it your best shot.

Thanks Archie. I'm guessing the same but I will try anyway.

Try and see. In the Egg and I Betty McDonald said she replanted three that she found along a roadside. The first she tried to dig up the root, but it was too long so she hacked it off, the other two he just hacked right below the surface, and they all grew...

I will get some tomorrow or Wednesday!
Oped thanks! Off to google The Egg and I lol.
ETA: I also realized while replanting it that there were a few tiny "offshoots" from it growing (not sure what they are called).

I've done this with a rhododendron, place a sturdy stake, taller than the plant, in the ground when you dig the hole, tie off the branches loosely with string to the stake to support them, water, fertilize on a a schedule, they are very hardy plants, good luck

Thanks Jake! I considered putting in a stake but the plant seemed solid, so I didn't. I will add one tomorrow!

Rhododendrons are woody-stemmed shrubs that bloom in the spring. Chrysanthemum plants bloom in late summer and autumn until frost. The damage you describe sounds more like what often happens to chrysanthemum plants. www.google.com/webhp?source=search_app#bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&fp=4ccd3541a1103ff7&q=chrysanthemum+free+image

I "pruned" an old rhody this past spring (after blooming). The bush was horrible looking and after reading up on YouTube just cut the entire thing down to three 6" wood stalks sticking out of the ground. I figured it was close to death anyway so why not? In the couple months since then, all three stalks have gotten covered in healthy new leaf growth. Amazing.

I have rhododendrons. As for as I can tell, you can't kill them.
