So I've offered to buy a twin sized extra long mattress set for my grandson. I'll have to buy bedding as well. And I'd rather not spend a fortune. Any recommendations, advice?

Around here (central California) it seems like there is always a mattress sale going on somewhere. Assuming that is true, I would start comparing prices and shopping around. Do you need to get the mattress and box spring and frame? And a headboard/bed? Or just the mattress and box spring?
I do know that I, personally, wouldn't purchase a used/refurbished mattress (I worry about bed bugs), and I don't even know if you could buy such things used. In any event, I wouldn't recommend that.
I would probably look online at Overstock and Amazon just to get a starting point, pricewise... though I can't imagine they'd end up being the lowest prices for the actual mattresses.
For sheets and bedding, I've had good luck "treasure hunting" at Overstock, Marshall's, Ross, Steinmart, TJ Maxx, Big Lots, and Target. Oh, and HomeGoods, if you have one of those.

Thanks! I had not considered a platform bed, but I do like the storage idea. I ***think*** his current frame would work - need to check with his dad.... Had not even considered Costco. Thanks so much!

I just bought my two girls mattresses last year and believe it or not I got the best deal at a furniture store. I bought two full size simmons beauty rest mattress and box springs. They eve threw in free the mattress covers for the warrenty. Try the furniture stores in your area. I wonder if it is b/c they are hurting for business?

Your grandson must be an older boy to need a long bed. If he is near adult age consider better quality since he will use it more years.
I got my great nephew a mattress for his second birthday at a furniture store for $99. I assume a 2 year old would wet the bed when potty training so the mattress wouldn't last long at any price. The boy is 14 now so I wouldn't consider a $99 mattress if buying for him.
If your grandson is a football player sized child I might consider the brand and build. For heavy people a Sterns and foster is better than some other brands but very expensive.

I really like my Ikea mattress and it wasn't too pricey. I've only had it a year so I am not sure how long of a life they have.

If this isn't a surprise, have him lie down on the beds. Sometimes the beds-in-a-bag come with sheets, comforter, the whole works. My GS has an old world tapestry design for his bed.

It's not a surprise. I thought I'd survey the situation, narrow the choice down, then take him with me to try out the bed and pick out the new bedding. Make an outing out of it.
