I came home from work tonight and DS (11.5) is no where to be found. I keep calling but get no answer. I check his bedroom and he's engrossed in a book. He didn't hear me come home.
He was reading the 9/11 Commission Report.
WTH?

Well, my 5 yr old told me that he is getting married, his wife's name is Vic, she is going to continue working since she already has a job and he is going to stay home, clean and take care of their kids. He asked my mom if he could have all the kids chairs that she has in her house for his kids. He also told me that his new wife can't meet me or my DH bc she is shopping for her wedding dress and it might take a long time.

My older two kids leave doors open all the time (doors to the basement, garage, outside, etc). I'm pretty afraid that my 15 month old is going to fall down a flight of steps onto a cement floor or escape our house and get hit by a car.
I was worried about DS's emotional health for a long while. That was mostly due to the baggage that I carried, though.

Hopefully, Vic will be on board with it as well. That's a really cute story.

Yesterday I was preparing the car for dropping off DS (just turned 2 yesterday ) at daycare. The car's in the garage and the garage is right outside the living room, so I just dipped in there and threw stuff in the front seat. I didn't bother putting DS in his contained play area since I wouldn't be gone for more than 20 seconds, so I left him where he was - watching the baby channel. I came back inside and the living room was empty. My heart sank and I started panicking and calling his name. He was in the hallway on the way to the master bedroom (I guess looking for me). WHEW!

Now- my 15 year old DS is oblivious to all that goes on around him. He doesn't notice thunder storms, the dog barking, etc. I really worry that the house could burn down around him and all he would notice was that it was getting a little warm in his room. When he was little my son like to "Die". It's hard to explain but if you gave him a special treat he would be all "I'm so happy I died" and then he'd dramatically flop himself down and stick out his tongue like a corpse. Writing it out sounds creepier than it really was. He was like 4 or so at the time. So one day I was in the garage and he was watching tv in our sunroom. I came back in the house and it was straight line of sight from the laundry room, through the kitchen and into the sunroom. He is laying on the couch with his head hanging off the edge and just staring off not moving at all. I screamed and started running towards him and he sat up and said "relax mom, Scooby Do came on and I was so excited I died" I explained to him that he needed to stop doing that before he gave him mom a heart attack for real.

Gwen takes flying leaps off the coffee table onto the couch. I really need to get her a helmet.

DS 4 seems drawn to the basement steps, and no matter how many times he falls down them he doesn't seem to learn to not play on them Also his head is like a magnet and he is always bumping it on something!

One evening our doorbell started ringing non-stop but we couldn't see anyone standing there (the top part of the door is glass). When we opened it, we found our then 2.5 year old grinning from ear to ear with excitement. She'd gone out the back door, walked around the house and up on to the front porch. She gave us a real fright because we live on a fairly busy road, not to mention the constant parental fear of having your child "snatched". Chains were put on both doors the next day .

DS (2.5) likes to climb any and all ladders he sees. He has zero fear of falling from anything. Yesterday he climbed the climbing wall at the playground like an expert (one of those walls with hand/footholds randomly placed on it). The climbing wall was at least 8 feet tall. I have visions of broken arms and/or legs in my future!

When DD was 2-3 the laundry was still in the basement. I went down to do a load, came back to find a chair at the door, the lock undone, door open and daughter down the driveway to the road...
That was the day I finally lost any remnant of condescension towards 'those kind' of mothers...
When we were at Devil's Tower there were several groups rock climbing. I could read the look in son's eye... I was like, that is the kind of thing, if you do it one day, you tell me about it AFTER...

My son has never done anything really scary physically. He just spooks me with his smarts. When he was 5 he came in to me and said " Mars has two moons. Bobos and Demos. Scientists think that someday Demos will crash into the surface of the red planet." (forgive me if I got the names wrong). As I sat there and looked at him like "Mars has moons " Seriously- sometimes I think the hospital sent us home with the wrong baby.

When my now-5 yr old was 3, he went out "to get the paper". He unlocked the door, went outside, came back and locked the door. I had no idea until hours later when I saw the paper. If I wasn't holding a baby in my arms, I probably would have fainted. When I told him that he should never EVER do that, his response "mommy, you told me this is our property and I am OK bc strangers won't come on to our property, so I am perfectly safe"
Yeah, we changed locks after that and I started watching VERY carefully what I say to my kids

DS was one of those fearless kids when he was little. He'd climb to the top of the slide and throw himself down the slide head first. I warned his babysitter when the weather turned warm and she mentioned bringing them to the park. I came to pick him up and she was still white as a ghost. I asked what was wrong and she kept saying "you warned me but I didn't listen". Yup- he ran off and climbed the ladder and flew down it head first faster than she could yell "Stephen! No!"
He was such a daredevil that we offered him a cash bonus if he made it to age 5 without a trip to the Emergency Room. He made it and we paid up. Still hasn't been to an ER (yes I knocked on wood). I totally figured he'd have stitches or a broken limb by now.

Gwen takes flying leaps off the coffee table onto the couch. I really need to get her a helmet. Helmet is probably cheaper than the stitches at the ER BTDT, but it was between the big bed and the toddler bed, jumping back and forth. I learned that my older kids can both handle themselves really calmly in the face of a bleeding screaming 2 year old though.

We've already been to the ER twice. She likes to shove rocks up her nose. DH has taken to looking up her nose with a flashlight when I bring her home from daycare, that way we can run to the Urgent Care clinic before it closes.

At least you can spot what she does shove up there. My DD was about 18 months when she comes to me saying "popcorn" and pointing to her nose. I looked, DH looked, I made her doctor look about 100 times. No one could see anything, but she kept telling me popcorn. Eventually, she had a few cavities (mom of year moment for me) and had to be put to sleep to fill them. I took a shot and asked the dentist doing it to look and see and sure enough, he brought me the popcorn kernel that she'd shoved up there months earlier. Yeah, I did get a new pediatrician.

DD is fearless. She scales the large jungle gyms at the playground trying to keep up with my 7yo nephew. She tried to go down the firepole that was maybe 15 ft off the ground. Got there just in time to catch her and her response was giggling and saying "Again, again!"
And she loves guys. She is a flirt. DH's friend came over the other day and she would not leave his side even though she had just met him. When we all went out for lunch, she refused to leave the house until he held her hand out to the car and buckled her in. When he left to go home, she cried for the rest of the day looking for him. She's done this to a couple of people now. I am so worried when we are out that some strange weirdo will walk up to her and she will just happily follow him away.

I told her if you want to know what happens manipulate another dumb kid into doing it instead. Don't stick it up your own nose. Dh said I'm in trouble if we get a phone call from the daycare.

Over President's Day weekend (January 15-16-17) in 1994, my DB, DSIL and then-22 month old DN were staying with us for the weekend. DN was sleeping on an air mattress in the living room downstairs. She was normally a deep sleeper, and for the first two nights of their stay she drifted off to sleep easily and stayed solidly asleep the entire night. Early in the morning on the 17th, she started crying, rolled off the air mattress and started pointing at the front door saying, "out, out." Her parents had a hard time calming her down, even opening the door and showing her there was nothing outside and nothing to worry about. They got her to settle down but fitfully, and after an hour or so she did it again (crying and pointing at the door "out out.") Right when they were putting her back to bed again and attempting to soothe her, the Northridge Earthquake hit.
