What are you up to that this concerns you, Jarrett? After a car transporting semi (is that what they are called?) made a hard right turn from the far left lane and almost killed my DH I'm glad. The truck driver didn't see my DH and turned right in front of him. Then he told the cop that my DH tried to pass him on the right. The idiot was coming in his lane and he was moving over thinking he was just changing lanes. But he was coming across all 3 lanes to make a turn on the right side! Had my DH not been paying attention and got his truck turned enough to be at an angle he would have hit head on but instead was able to hit the front wheel of the semi. It still totaled his truck but at least he wasn't hurt very bad or killed. He was bruised and had a little whip lash but that was all. And now he gets a brand new company truck.

Well now that's a story with a happy ending?... yes but you see my cars are all from the sixties...so "I" kinda don't have to worry about the black box thing...but those happy endings...now there's something "I" can get my teeth into

LOL! I thought mine was old! It's a 1995. DH keeps trying to get me to get a new vehicle but mine runs perfectly, has been paid off for years, and it's still cute! I'll just tell him about the little black box in the new ones and maybe he'll quit bugging me about it.

I think they kind of frown on drag racing (on the street) nowadays, jarrett - and more's the pity. Used to be a regular weekend event when I was a young-un. We'd all hang out and we chicks would cheer on our (B/F of the day) to win.
The one advantage to the box would be in case of accident - it would be another tool for determining what/who was at fault.
As for other driving infractions, there's enough cameras set up all over the place now as it is. They're installed at pretty much every controlled intersection on top of traffic lights - as well as in school/playground zones, and along stretches of road or highway.

You can still drag race in a car with a black box. It doesn't upload the information anywhere, just stores it. If you get caught drag racing through the streets the box could be used as evidence, but if you get caught drag racing you're screwed anyway with just the cops testimony. All this does is allow insurance companies and the police to know what really happened leading up to an accident. Win in my book since I've been in an accident where the other guy tried to say it was my fault.

gps monitors
black boxes
do you all care about privacy at all?
or are you ok with companies/government taking your liberty and freedom one little step at a time?
or is your thought "i have nothing to hide anyway"

What privacy? It's been a myth for a decade dude. You guys worry about black boxes on cars... the government has your entire bank record. If you use a debit card they see every single individual purchase you make. They know where your savings is, how often you put money into it, etc. They're tracking what you do online. They're reading your email. They're reading your text messages. They're probably automatically transcribing your phone calls and feeding that through their pattern recognition computers too. You don't have any privacy anymore... not real privacy anyway. You have the illusion of privacy because they have the good grace not to shove in your face how much of it they've already taken away.
Of that whole list, a cop being able to see what my car was doing immediately before a crash doesn't honestly bother me. When the black box starts uploading my entire driving history we'll be having a completely different conversation. Right now it works just like the black box in a plane, it's only used to record what the vehicle was doing in the event of a crash. I'm fine with that.

aaaah
but that is the rub....they will now have all the info
and with onstar and so many more in car communications systems, this information will be able to be uploaded SOON
if we continue to just let it happen, all of our privacy rights will be gone....
the emails, the phone date collection...
soon your medical information...
already have all your financial through irs and banks
i am just saying....when is enough, enough

And your Bluetooth is not recording the sounds in your car...and the air system is not recording the smoke in its screens...the problem with not having a problem with stuff is that by the time you figure out it is a problem...you won't be able to do anything about it....like now...like I said all my cars are pre '70...so I don't care what they do...just jam the externals and its all good

I'm in favor of them - for the reasons Dark mentioned (in comparison to aircraft crashes/failures - it makes investigation of an accident that much easier to prove who's at fault or what actually happened instead of verbal statements or testimony).
The Government probably has more dirt on all of us than you've even thought about yet. Did you ever read George Orwell's "1984"? It was written in 1944 and much of it has come true. Big Brother is Watching.

The car computer stores more information than just the last X minutes of your driving. A couple car companies now have the thing where you plug it into your car and you get your rates based on that - they're looking at the info for things like how fast you accelerate, how fast/hard you break, and other things like that. So they're not just used in case of an accident already.

True, but that's still optional for now. The black box by default doesn't broadcast or upload the information anywhere. It's just stored in the car and used for accident investigation, (which I really don't have a problem with) unless you choose to get a device that will upload the information to your insurance company to get cheaper insurance rates (which freaks me out a bit).

A few of those look like my brothers' former cars - (and some of the guys I dated back in the day had muscle cars).
One of my brothers still has a Black 2 Dr. Hardtop Chevy Impala SS. Looks like this one.
Another has a '64 Mustang & '69 Dodge Charger RT - among others.

Just finished watching American Graffiti on TV. Those cars were smokin' !!
The yellow '32 Ford Deuce Coupe was my favorite - it reminds me of my brother's blue '34 Dodge coupe that he built/customized.
American Graffiti Car:
My brother's was like this (this one's a '33) only his was in a metallic (candy apple?) dk blue:
This is the car from American Graffiti I'd love to own - '56? TBird - Awesome car:
