'Bush 41, security detail, shave heads to show solidarity with young cancer patient'
(CNN) – Last week, former President George H. W. Bush had a full head of hair when he gave President Barack Obama a pair of socks. Today, it's gone, shaved to the scalp in solidarity with a young cancer patient. According to a statement from a spokesman for the 41st president, Bush shaved his head after members of his Secret Service detail shaved theirs, meant to show solidarity with Patrick, the two year-old son of one of the detail who is battling leukemia. Members of the security detail have already created a website meant to raise money to pay for Patrick's treatment. His last name is being withheld along with that of his father Jon. At 89, Bush shaved his head this week after making a donation to Patrick's leukemia treatment. Bush and his wife Barbara lost their second child, Robin, to the disease six decades ago at the age of four. According to the release, the security detail is also organizing a motorcycle benefit run next month that will ride through the Maine countryside and host a lunch and silent auction to raise money for Patrick's treatment. I've always loved Bush, Sr. What a sweet thing to do! I hope and pray Patrick wins this battle. It is so heartbreaking when anybody has to deal with this but especially so when little kids have to deal with this horrible, cruel disease.

I had trouble putting Bush 41, together with the story, it looks like his age. Bad title IMO
But this is an awfully nice gesture to show solidarity with the cancer patient. Kinda sweet actually.

He was the 41st President but it confused me at first too. Even Jeb is older than that!

Yeah I know, but this looks like his age.
I had edited shortly after when I realized you probably did know that.

Yup. Think father, then son, in that order.

I'd shave my head and start up a donations website for a human interest spot on CNN.

I admire the effort but this bothers me: "Members of the security detail have already created a website meant to raise money to pay for Patrick's treatment. His last name is being withheld along with that of his father Jon." "At 89, Bush shaved his head this week after making a donation to Patrick's leukemia treatment." "the security detail is also organizing a motorcycle benefit run next month that will ride through the Maine countryside and host a lunch and silent auction to raise money for Patrick's treatment." WTF- even the Secret Service healthcare insurance is too shitty to cover the cost of treatment? Another casualty of the American healthcare system.

Not sure what point you're trying to make. The (former) president is taking steps to raise funds for the child's treatment. The SS Staff assigned to him, has joined his cause - probably working on their own time - not the Government's.
Whatever health care insurance the Secret Service staff have, I doubt the plan would include covering anyone who's not a member of the Secret Service, or a member of their immediate family - so why are you bringing that up?

The boy is the son of a member of the detail, as per the OP.

One battle is enough.

Understand it is rare but I once actually had a gal at a medical insurance company tell me that I was going through enough with my medical situation and I needed to stop stressing some minor mix-up in paperwork, that she would handle it. Blew me away.

Actually billisonboard it is not that rare, my sister and a friend both got the same response when they hit a glitch while dealing with medical issues as well. My mother had numerous medical issues which were dealt with without a hitch. I have never had significant issues with my, or my family's, medical coverage. It's just much easier for people to bitch and moan about the rare instances where things are rough, which is what tends to make the news, then to acknowledge the system actually works pretty well for a vast majority of the population.

Well we could do that, but I'm not sure what medical treatment anyone will get when all the doctors and medical facilites are out of business....

It's not for this thread- but yeah- all medical costs should be fully covered and not with a premium- by taxes. Maybe go ask a Canadian how they get medical treatment since all of their medical facilities are out of business and their doctors quit, etc., etc..... My only real point was that it is pretty shitty to have to have a fundraiser to pay medical bills. We can do better and should.
