The Quiznos rat. Who wants lunch hawked by a rat? That was so gross - those rodents with the shriveled up legs! I'm so glad I've never eaten there......

Not as bad as a rat, but the Burger King marionette-like "King" guy was very freaky. That one commercial where they were advertising breakfast and the people woke up with him sitting in bed with them gave me the screaming heebie jeebies.

There's a minor league baseball team in Montgomery AL called the Biscuits. Sadly, their mascot isn't a biscuit. It looks like an orange distant cousin of the Phanatic to me. With an elephant trunk.

Did anyone find the Burger King mascot amusing? I don't know how it lasted that long.

Don't you sometimes wonder at the marketing people involved in these decisions? What were they trying to do there? Does the whole team work in a setting like the one described in the old fable about the emperor wearing no clothes? WTH?
And for people without a marketing team (like the dolphin guy on the other thread), don't they have any close friends who can give them some gentle input to stop being so creepy?
When Michael Jackson started doing some totally bizarre things and then gave that chilling interview about how he wasn't a pedophile, I kept thinking about how sad it was that he obviously didn't have any true friends. A true friend would have helped him see how the world would view his actions or at least convinced him to keep his mouth shut and not discuss some of his ideas publicly. I guess when you get that wealthy and cut yourself off from the world, you end up surrounded by "yes" men who only tell you what you want to hear to keep on the gravy train. Very sad.

Speaking of Quiznos did anybody see the "sexual harassment" commerials as I call them? It's a guy holding a sandwich and the oven starts talking to him in a Barry White type voice. Porn music in the background. At the end the oven tells him "Put it in me Scott". First time I saw it I told DH I hope the oven is talking about the sandwich! Skittles needs to fire their marketing department. None of their commericals make me want to eat skittles. The "skittle pox" one and the one with the guy sweating out skittles in a lab make me gag. Yeah that's what you want people to think of when it comes to your product.

Ok, I totally agree on the BK guy. He was just weird.
I don't think I ever saw the Quiznos rats. They are horrible....
I personally like Jack and the 'noid.

kind of OT but the worst name has to be the South Carolina Gamecocks Go cocks! (that's how fans root during games) <<wait a minute maybe that's a good name after all>> LOL! That's what I say and root for during games. And I found the Burger King dude very creepy! Ronald McDonald just seemed flamboyant to me and not very appetizing for my taste.

Did nobody in that meeting raise a hand and point out the flaws in that commerical?

They were just too excited by the Barry White voice........
Did it ever occur to them that the oven would probably be the female in that scenario? Or were they trying to appeal to a gay audience? I know sex sells and all but I'd think a small amount of thought would still be necessary.

That's what DH kept trying to figure out. My theory is it dawned on somebody the outcry that would result if the oven was a chick, but instead of scraping the idea someone else said "Lets make it a dude! That makes it less creepy/offensive right?".

Here's the mascot for a city in my state: Richland BOMBERS... due to being near the Hanford nuclear plant. Talk about poor taste!

There is a high school in the general area that are called the Stoners.
It's for Sandstone, a construction material that is found in the area and the reason the area was settled.

They are trying to reach the teenaged crowd, and make candy not feel like baby/kid food. So, they are making skittles ads show skittles in gross-ish ways. It appeals to who they want it to appeal to. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean that the campaign is a failure.

This thread is reminding of an old news story I saw about a high school that changed their mascot to the Fighting Whitey's to protest all the "discriminatory" native American mascots. They used that line drawing of the white guy head that you see on beer posters and stuff.
Like that, but without the beer.
I wonder if they've changed it yet.

No one said my least favorite which is the Stanford Cardinal (the color) so it is represented by the Tree of Knowledge - which looks like a kindergarten felt project.

I totally get the idea of marketing to a target group and even if that marketing turns off other groups, it's still successful. But I'm still trying to figure out who the target group was for the dolphin guy, the Quizno's rat and the BK King.

This explains why Quizno's went with the spongemonkeys. And I will say that it was effective, because we are still talking about those ads, and they have been off the air for nearly 10 years. I had never even heard of Quiznos before that, so it did what it intended, I guess. Again, they aren't after my dollars, so if it worked on the weird college crowd, it was probably a good idea. www.slate.com/articles/business/ad_report_card/2004/02/the_creatures_from_the_sandwich_shop.html
