I'm not counting the pennies to find out. Maybe $40? No clue.

((Starts making a list if houses to visit))
We probably have about $1k in the house right now. But $600 of that is allowance money we stash for my daughter each month (we don't give her the entire stash to blow). I only hit the bank every few months and I just hit it recently so I have about $400 in my nightstand.
I also keep $100 in the glovebox in my car. I actually forgot about it until I was looking for the paperwork for my inspection....I love finding money! Of course, I felt like a bad YM'r for forgetting about it in the first llace

Anybody looking for cash in our house would be disappointed. I have maybe $75 rolled up in coins. DH and I each take $200 at a time from the ATM so whatever is left of the latest withdrawal is in our wallets. There's also an old brass spittoon where DH throws his pennies in the bedroom. If, OTOH, they found where I've hidden the key and combo to the safe and then found the safe and all the jewelry, they'd be able to buy enough drugs to last them the rest of the year. Pawn shops don't give a lot though.

Years ago when my Dad and his partner owned a manufacturing jewelry operation, they used to collect all the gold dust and scrap every year or two. Dad would have it shipped from Atlanta to a place out on the Long Island and then he'd go up there and they'd melt it all down and pay him. Sometimes $20-$30k in cash(not sure why ). But I remember paying my college tuition with cash he gave me.

I have $200 in my desk drawer because DH gave me money for my Mother's Day present that I paid for. I usually carry around $60 in cash and that will last me a good several months. I don't pay cash for hardly anything. I have about $40 in my glovebox. I have no idea how much cash that DH has sitting around the house, but its probably a few hundred. Somewhere that I don't know about. And then we have assorted coin jars...one of them is a big water jug, the five gallon kind. It's probably 3/4 full of non pennies (those go in another jar!), so that could be a few hundred.
I'd be screwed in an apocalypse.

$3.50 in rolled pennies, probably $10 in coins in DH's closet and I think $10 in my Christmas Club bank.
Last year we would put in $2.00 a week in my bank (little ceramic bank with a lock and key). That bought stocking stuffers and Christmas Eve dinner for the family. This year we decided to put in $5.00 a piece. I knew it wouldn't work and it didn't.

for those of you with little to no cash available at your house
do you have contingency plans if we have a banking crisis, and you cant access your accounts for a week or so?
What would you do in a case like that....or in your mind is it so remote a chance, that you arent worried about it?
i have girls in my office that dont even carry a $ 20 bill for emergencies
My DW carries a minimum of $ 200 cash at all times, as i do
And we have enough at the house to where in the no access to banks scenario, we would have no issue for a month or two

But I guess my contingency plan would be to stay the fuck home in my comfy house watching tv and eating and stuff. Or continue going to work - assuming that the banks didn't shut down because of a zombie apocalypse. Then my plan would be to lock the doors before sitting on the couch watching tv and eating snacks.

lets say it is NOT a zombie apocalypse
but lets say terrorists somehow got access to our electrical grid and shut it down
no atms, no banks, no access to accounts
i am not saying it will happen.....
but what if.....do you have access to enough cash to weather a small storm like that (say it lasts a week)

In your no power sceanrio, what stores are open? Why would I be out and about if terrorists had taken over the country? Honestly it sounds like in this sceanrio I would have way bigger problems than needing a little cash. In a normal, non zombie terrorist scenario - I have enough food in the house to get me through at least a week.

My purse has something like $15 in it. DH probably has about $30 in his wallet. There's probably about $20 in assorted change in the house and maybe $50 each in the kids' piggy banks.

What would you need cash for? All the stores would be closed. Gas pumps don't work without power. Neither do cash registers.

And if the cash registers DID still work, why would they stop taking credit cards? Anyhoodle, we'd all be out looting so cash would be a moot point unless strippers were still accepting it for lap dances.

I think we would be fine for a week or two....because, as others have pointed out, no one would be open, etc. I don't expect a massive power grid outage that impacts a huge area that would last a significant amount of times. If we are talking about a storm (Sandy or similar), we would stock up and get cash before the storm to make sure we were ok.
Perhaps ignorance is bliss? But I prefer to think a huge outage is unlikely.

I also know a bunch of folks that got thwacked by Sandy lived without power for longer than that! And you're right - cash is useless in SOME places. All you can do is hunker down and make do with what you have - and hopefully you are well-stocked to survive at least a week. Longer than that - a lot more of us would be in trouble. But having said that, there IS always a use for cash in a black market (just sayin' . . . ) The trick would be finding that market in the face of the zombie apocalypse . . . but I'm sure resourceful people would find it, and cash would be VERY useful . . . Heck "if push came to shove," I might even become a seller in that market . . . I grow and preserve food and I grow medicinal herbs as a hobby.

If the electrical grid fails I probably won't be too worried about going out to buy a pack of gum. I would think in that situation, barter items (guns, ammo, jewelry, Rx drugs) would be more useful than cash, anyway.

We are no cash people. I have $3 in my purse. DH probably has $0. There might be a coin here or there in the house.
Earlier this week we stopped to get a drink and had no cash between the 2 of us, so it went on debit card. I try to have a few dollars for that kind of thing, but I don't always.

The only cash we have in the house is whatever is in my wallet or DW's purse (probably about $200 total). We also have a piggy bank that I throw all my loose change into. Last time it got full it was about $150 so that max is likely to be $350 ish at any one point.

Just steal the gum while you're looting the big-screen TVs.

Loot jewelry, it's worth way more pound for pound. You can only carry one TV at a time, and they don't fit inside your jacket.

If it's going to be a good long apocalypse, I'd loot water, tampons, diapers, soap, and toilet paper. Those are going to be worth some cash on the black market.

Having experienced hurricanes, having cash on hand is a BIG deal. Many stores can and do remain open in the aftermath with the help of generators to power lights and coolers, but not cash registers, credit card machines. I made purchases in stores that used a pen and receipt book to keep track of purchases.
On the flip side, if something a bit less natural happens, cash won't meant squat. In that case, having enough food, water, and all the other emergency supplies will determine how well you and your family survive.

ok
the reason i carry cash, and my DW does is we have both seen circumstances where only cash worked
when people dont have enough cash to put gas in their car if the phone lines are down, that is just silly to me
but, what do i know......
