Greetings, friends! It's that time again - Midday on a weekday, I'm bored, and feel like telling a story. Today's tale is about my most recent purchase from Amazon.ca. Usually I order and receive my merchandise without incident, but this time, a really strange roundabout thing happened... Hubby and I are avid Hell's Kitchen fans, and we have been ordering each season on DVD as they are released - We watch the episodes on TV when they're first aired, but the television networks always cut out all the good stuff, so we like to get the DVDs and watch em again with all the swearing intact Anyway, so I ordered Season 4 in late November when it was released, and the DVD was delivered to us without any problems. When we sat down to watch the episodes, we discovered that out of 15 episodes in the season, 3 of them wouldn't play on our DVD player, or on either of our computers. I think maybe the files on the disks are corrupted or something, because there doesn't appear to be anything physically wrong with them (no scratches, cracks, etc). So I logged into my Amazon account, and put in a request to have the item replaced. Since it was getting close to Christmas, the website informed me that they wouldn't send out the replacement until Jan 1, and I would have until Jan 31 to send back the defective copy. They even gave me a nifty little shipping label so I could send the DVD back to them free of charge. After that, things got pretty busy for the holidays, and I forgot about the return until I got an email from Amazon on Dec 31 confirming that my replacement DVD had been shipped to me, and would be delivered in a few days. Excellent! As soon as it was in my hot little hands, I was planning on sending the defective one back to them, seeing as how I had till Jan 31 to do so. A few days passed, but the DVD didn't show up. In mid January, I got an email from Amazon saying that there was a problem - They apparently weren't able to deliver to the address on file (Which I find very puzzling - It's the same address I've always had on file with them, and I've had at least a dozen orders successfully delivered to said address) and the DVD had been returned to their warehouse. They indicated that they were unable to re-ship the DVD to me, and I would have to place a new order if I still wanted it. Here's the kicker - they also indicated that they would "refund my credit card" for the amount of the purchase. I figured I wouldn't get anything because it technically wasn't a purchase, it was a return. Wouldn't you know it, when I got my CC statement, there was indeed a refund for the full amount of the original purchase back in November. So now I have a defective set of DVDs, which I never returned because I never received the replacement, but in the end they turned out to be free. I sent an email to the Amazon staff to tell them about the issue, and asking what to do about it, and they told me to simply "re-order" the merchandise, even though I made it clear this was a return, and not a new order. What I'm wondering is if I put in another request to return, will I end up with a good copy for free? Or do you think eventually they'll charge me for not sending the defective DVD back? I don't mind paying for the DVDs I want, but things have gotten a little complicated here...I'm tempted to just keep my free (but defective) DVDs.

This is common around the holidays (except for the not being able to deliver thing, that's a bit weird). They don't want to keep messing around with shipping so they just refund the original purchase and then wait for you to re-order a new copy. It ends up cheaper for them than messing around with using labor to try and fix it. So order a new one or don't...Amazon could care less at this point Their refund to you was basically them washing their hands of the situation.

I think it would be ok for you to do nothing at this point and keep the defective DVD's. Amazon compensated you because you received defective DVD's, and did not ask for a return. But if you re-order, and get working DVD's, then I don't think you should put in another request to return. Maybe I misunderstood that though ...

Sort of - I did ask to return the defective ones, and asked them to send me a new copy, and they attempted to do so but for whatever reason, the delivery of the replacement couldn't be completed...So I guess they refunded me the money instead of sending a new set of DVDs. What I was getting as is when I asked about the replacement DVDs not coming in, and getting the refund instead, the staff at Amazon told me to put my order through again. They probably meant to BUY the DVDs in a brand new order, but in the "past order" section, there's still the option of "returning" this item, and asking them to send out another copy even though I received a refund. I'm not saying I WILL do this, I'm just wondering if it is possible. Like if I "return" it again, will they send me a good copy (essentially for free)? For the record, I will most likely just keep the defective DVDs I have right now - or put through a brand new order to purchase them again. Just something I've been musing over...thought it might be interesting to share with you guys
