Young woman my cusomer just walked into the store and while she shopped I had noticed her ring and went WOW! What is it and all...she said yes, it is an engagement ring she had gotten a few weeks ago from her american bf. She is from Ukraine or something. Very hard working and good gal. I used to love her. So I am asking when is the wedding will take place. She responding 'no wedding, I am not feeding these americoses'...That is degradingly put for 'americans' which uses in place of 'stupid worthless americans'... SO I was dumbfound and I had asked 'is your BF not american?' She said 'yes, he is'...so I said 'you are not a citizen, are you?' She said no. I am still seeething. HOW can you marry someone out of the nation hating the nation? Or simply disrespecting it? And HOW stupid can you be to not to understand that your kids WILL BE AMERICANS or as you put 'americoses' OMG! What is wrong with these forreighners who keep biting feeding hand and having no regrets!

So she loves the person and not the country. Meh, unless she starts fomenting rebellion, anarchy or riots, I'm OK with her apathy. FWIW, my husband and I have been married 23 years now and he has not become a US citizen. He won't really talk about why, but I think he things Americans are tacky.

I know a decent amt of Brits that won't become US citizens. As long as they have their green card, they're ok....

In order to become a US citizen you had you renounce your other country. Now the Americanos don't require that and you can be a dual citizen. My Canadian friend finally became a citizen after being married to her American Army pilot DH for 20 years. They have kids and someone convinced her that if something happened to her DH it would be much easier for her to remain in the country with her children if she had American citizenship. That doesn't sound quite right to me but I'm sure it would be a lot less hassle. Frankly I just think it would be cool to have a couple of passports under which to travel. Ya never know...

I would totally travel under a Canadian passport if I had one.
i don't really care if someone doesn't want to become a citizen, as long as they are here legally and paying taxes....no skin off my back. And if they plan to go back to their home country, being a US citizen might be a disadvantage (I have several Chinese coworkers in this situation)

My uncle from the UK has been here 40ish years, still not a citizen. Think he said something last time I saw him about becoming one finally.

I once knew a guy (American) who married a Canadian woman. They lived in the US for a while, and then moved to Canada and had a kid. Then they got divorced. She ended up taking the kid and he lost his job because his employer wouldn't sponsor a work visa, so he had to leave the country. Last thing I heard, he was living in a van down by the river on the US side of the Canadian border and frantically trying to get to see his kid again. It wasn't going well and then I lost contact so I've no idea how things turned out.
Anyways, to avoid a similar situation, I'd think going the dual-citizenship route would be a good idea.

Um, look at the size of the ring on her finger. Now you know why she is marrying him.

If she is only marrying him for a green card, she is committing marriage fraud. She is welcome to marry the guy and never go the next step to get citizenship, but if she is strictly marrying to stay in the US, it is fraud.

I don't find that hard to believe at all...that's pretty modestly dressed by the standards of the Eastern European gaggle that hangs around outside the pub in town here every night... Hey Ratchets, would that be, um, "ladies" night at the pub?

Hey Ratchets, would that be, um, "ladies" night at the pub? In the very loosest sense of the word "ladies" I suppose...kind of like calling billiards players "athletes" Hey now....those are some heavy balls on the table.
