Well, I've finally come to the realization that I can't pick individual stocks very well. Pride goeth before the fall they say. Since I can't monitor the markets daily up and downs and respond accordingly, I'm now looking to buy just some sector index funds to cover most all bases. I'm thinking getting into about only 5 market sectors but not sure which ones. Why just 5, I don't know. Less to deal with I guess.
I'm not asking for any recommendations on any particular fund, (but it might help), just the sector. Which sectors should I look at for long term?
Is this a good idea

Rip,
I don't know why you have trouble picking stocks. Take a look at the Dividend Stock thread and the Long Term Investor thread.
My recommendation would be to start with the stocks that have great historical histories of doing well - Look at the Magnificent 7 or the DOW Aristocrats in the Dividend thread to start. These companies have been doing great for 25, 50, 100 years - not rocket science. The turtle always wins the race.
