I'll be coming home to an empty house this evening. Dh will be working all night and the kiddo's are spending the night somewhere. I have no idea what to do with myself... I walk around naked. Clean naked, dance naked, sing naked...read naked. I even eat ice cream naked!

Whenever I could get the house to myself when the kids were little, I'd come home from work, put on comfy clothes and do whatever I felt like doing. It was soooo nice to not feel guilty that I was to tired to do more than boil some noodles and warm some spaghetti sauce for the kids to have an actual supper instead of yet another "fend for yourself". It was nice to not have to worry that if I had one drink to many I wouldn't have good reaction time to anything the kids might do to get hurt or overreact to something small they did that annoyed me. It was just nice to not have to do anything I didn't feel like doing.
With DD2 and DGD living with me, I'm kind of back to some of that guilt although now I nag at DD2 to make sure she is provided decent meals to DGD. But me and the BF called it quits this past weekend and I wanted some time alone so I asked DD2 to go stay with her dad for Father's Day and a few more days after. Last night I got home, put on some comfy clothes, turned up the music and poured myself a honking big glass of wine while I made supper. Needless to say the cat was not impressed by my dancing or choice of music but I didn't care. After I ate, I watched TV til I was bored and then went and sat on my front porch and finished off the bottle of wine while playing on FB and listening to the birds. I hadn't felt so content in months and even though I probably should have gone to bed a little earlier and am a bit tired this morning, I am still feeling laid back and content with where my life is going.

Potato chips and dip when no one is looking. Big glass of red wine to wash it down. Eat and sleep whenever I want.

I used to treasure evenings alone when I had 3 kids and DH at home. I didn't get a lot of them at home, but I would enjoy quiet evenings when I had to travel (usually 2-3 times a month). Eat what I want, watch crappy TV, enjoy bottle of wine.
Now that kids are pretty much out of the house and it is just DH and I, it is not nearly as exciting.

do you have any chili in the freezer? thaw out a single portion and make nachos for yourself. I did that last night with some black bean pulled chicken, and I will absolutely be doing it again some time.

Yes, it's not about what you want, it is what you want that nobody else wants you to have.
Remembering when I was growing up. On the rare occasion that my mom was gone for the evening, my Dad, who does not cook, would whip up a pot of sauerkraut, because mom would not let him.

My family hates seafood, so when they're gone, I like to boil crab legs (dang, I really need to sign up for food stamps!) or eat sardines on crackers.

Love the suggestions... But - DH has decided to come home "early" with DD from the amusement park tonight to watch the Hawks game... So my night of freedom is curtailed I can't cook something stinky, but I may get takeout since they will be eating dinner early before they leave the park. I'm thinking Shrimp ceviche tostadas from my favorite mexican hole in the wall...

How is it possible to live in Florida on the water and hate seafood?

Sometimes when I have the house to myself, I blast a playlist from my iPhone and clean while dancing so I get double the aerobic benefit, LOL. I like that, with the music, I can get a lot accomplished in a shorter period of time and that the place stays clean long enough for me to enjoy it. Other times when I have the house to myself, I tackle one household task at a time -- without multi-tasking -- because, frankly, multi-tasking can be a drag. It's nice to focus on on thing for a while, kwim? And, finally, sometimes when I have the house to myself, I curl up and take a well-deserved nap. It all depends upon my mood that day.

Sorry, but those bugs they call lobsters in Florida don't belong in the same species as a delectable Maine lobster. JMHO. YMMV.

Maybe it comes from being born and raised in a landlocked state but I've never had issues with Florida seafood. Then again I'm not a huge lobster fan. I'll eat it in stuff but I'm never going to go out and order lobster or buy it at the grocery store as a main course.

New England seafood (while a struggling ecosystem due to over-fishing) is cold water seafood. Cold water seafood just tastes better to me. Grouper just doesn't compare to a nice piece of haddock or striped bass or REAL clam chowder or Cape Cod scallops.

I see your point but milee was in AZ before FL so I'm just curious to her family's reasoning. When the only "fresh" seafood you have access to is questionable and expensive, warm water seafood tastes pretty damn good! I'm on the water now but I don't share the obsession with crabs and Old Bay seasoning.

Something stinky that your family hates. My family hates seafood, so when they're gone, I like to boil crab legs (dang, I really need to sign up for food stamps!) or eat sardines on crackers. How is it possible to live in Florida on the water and hate seafood? No idea. They're nuts. I like to think of it as "more crab for me, then!!! You picky eaters can just stick with whatever gruel you're eating." I don't buy the Florida lobsters. Usually either local shrimp, stone crab or fish, but it's awesome to eat fish I catch 'cause I'm not a great fisherman so it's a rare and much anticipated event. For a while even though it's very strong tasting and not something I'd seek out, I loved the Spanish Mackerel because it was so much fun to catch (fishing day with a friend), but my standard fish favs are yellowfin snapper and amberjack, but that's hard to find. Pretty much any snapper is awesome. Grouper is good too, but I don't trust most of the restaurants to actually serve grouper and not some weird Asian Basa or other cheap substitute, so unless it's from someone I know, I don't get grouper. Fresh gulf shrimp and stone crabs seem to be good from most any of the sources and restaurants around here, though, so they're always a good fallback. As for the non-fresh stuff, I love, love, love preserved anchovies and sardines. Yes, I know I'm the only one and I don't care - that's more for me.

Oh, and there is nothing as awesome as the cold water oysters! OMG, PEI oysters are heavenly. Before the oil spill, I'd eat the Gulf oysters if they were all that was available (often the case in the seafood shacks around here), but they weren't my favorites. After the spill, I don't eat Gulf oysters and have rethought what other Gulf seafood I want to eat as well.

I haven't had Gulf oysters in years. I used to go to Panama City a couple times a year and my friends always had to go out for raw oysters. The only oysters I eat now are at Christmas when my stepbrother makes oysters rockefeller. Heavy cream makes everything delicious ;D

I blink and miss it. Usually the only time I have the house to myself is if DH is working and the stars have aligned that all 3 kids are gone for the night. Last time, I was cooking dinner because they had gone to pick someone up, not much time to get up to something. Last time I actually had the place to myself for hours, I played MY music loud and watched it on YouTube.

I always have "the house" (meaning my apartment) to myself. So the same things I always do, watch netflix, cruise the internet, play video games, stuff like that.
